Is anyone interested in doing marching band in the fall? Or do some current members have any info on it?

son has three marching band people in his house as a sophomore…they are super fun, throw parties and have a lot of esprit de corps as a group…some time commitments involved of course… two of his friends competed for marching band leadership positions as juniors and won them and so I guess I can say…that some people enjoy this aspect of life at Duke…otherwise…they are in separate majors and not from similar backgrounds at all…they move onto campus early each summer

I’m definitely participating in the marching band next year! The marching band at my high school is terrible, so regardless of how good/bad the Spirit of Gold is, I’m sure it’ll be better than what I’ve been a part of for the last four years. I’m really looking forward to it. Out of curiosity, what instrument do you play?

By the way, be sure to fill out this form on their website.

whoops apologies in post #2. Meant to say “life at Vandy”

not Duke…sorry…eldest is a Duke grad–

@LBlock I play clarinet! You? But it’s the same thing with me…our band didn’t even march, and we weren’t exactly the best haha
@Faline I understood what you were saying Thank you so much for your advice!

Hi all!

I’m one of Faline2’s son’s housemates, and I also happen to be this year’s Spirit of Gold drum major. Joining the band was the best decision I made at Vanderbilt and I’m happy to answer any questions. PM me and I’ll add you on facebook and show you where to go to find pictures =). Your section leaders will be getting in touch with you later this summer, I marched sousa before becoming field commander.

In terms of time commitment, we practice Tuesday, Thursday, and some Fridays 4:30 - 6:30. We perform at all home games and will be traveling to at least one away game this season. Band camp starts August 16th, and it’s a fantastic way to meet people and make friends before the rest of freshmen even get to campus. You’ll also have a good connection with lots of upperclassmen, which I found to be extremely useful for rides to the store and such my freshman year.

Feel free to ask me anything, here or in PMs or on facebook! I’m also happy to dicuss anything related to Vanderbilt in general.
