Sports at Columbia as a Freshman?

Is anyone planning on doing a sport as their first year for that sport next year?

I was thinking about wanting to do rowing, but i've never rowed before. Anyone know what I could, should do?

If you've never rowed before, it will almost certainly not be possible to enter a Division 1 collegiate rowing program.

It depends if you want to do a club sport or intercollegiate level team. That said, if you have the proper build for crew and are athletic, you could row D-1. Are you a natural athlete?

Columbia is D1 for sports. It isn't like joining your high school JV or frosh team where anyone can just sign up.

1-AA for football.

I know that. Alot of high schools don't have crew. If you have the right build and are an athlete you still can have a very good chance. Same for other D-1 sports. When I was in college playing D-1 women's lax, our coach got several never to play before athletes on the team, a few of whom ultimately became all-american. Never say never.

How about if you just want to try it out, not necessarily compete? For instance, I want to give fencing a whirl, even though I've never even tried it. I know that I wouldn't be able to get into the D1 fencing team (nor do I think I'd want to), but what other options are available?

Well, for dabbling, there's plain ol' P.E. Columbia offers a good variety of sports each taught by instructors who are experienced in that area. Gym classes meet twice a week, an hour each.

For more involvement, there's intramural and club sports, though I'm less familiar with those as I don't do them.

rowing is not that hartd, after about four monthes of practice. You should buy an erg and practice at home

I will be on Columbia's track team as a freshman next year, but my situation is defferent because I was recruited.

Does Columbia have an extensive recruiting program? I know like three kids recruited for Columbia sports and I only know one other person being recruited by any other school. Also, if you are not recruited, does that mean that you have no chance at all of playing varsity sports?

It depends on the sport.

Depends on the sport, coach, you, why you weren't recruited, etc. Walk-ons have been star players at major football/basketball schools.

Trust me, if you want to row at Columbia... you can row at Columbia.

First off, crew programs LOVE walk-ons, so there aren't any real try-outs for freshman. If you show up, they will put you in a boat and you will practice. In fact, the freshman rowers assignment the first week of school was to go out and convince another kid to row.

Yes, Columbia Crew is a D1 sport.... but they are not exactly competitive at that level. They have always been at the bottom of the D1 league. Just how bad are they? There are some D1 freshman crews that could beat their varsity boat (not just saying that either).

So, if you want to row at Columbia... go for it! It is a great fit for walk-ons who want to participate in a D1 sport.
