Sports at W&L

I know Washington and Lee is Division III but what exactly does that mean? Is it easier to get on sports teams because the athletes all go Div. I or does it just mean that tere's no athletic scholarsips and no national attention.

If I really like a sport, for example soccer, but don't have any competitive experience because I decided to concentrate on other EC's during high school, can I still try out for the team? Will I probably end up embarassing myself?

No way, go for it. Div. III varsity sports will be less competitive to get into than D I, but don't think that there aren't DIII recruited atheletes who are just as hardcore as at DI schools. There won't be enough to fill up an entire team, however, so you stand to do very well for yourself. If it doesn't work out, intramural and club sports at DIII schools are very welcoming.

I really want to play a sport-- probably soccer-- at the intramural level, but I probably wouldn't go for varsity. There are just too many things I want to do in college, and athletics is a huge time commitment.
