Sports Business at UO and the Warsaw Sports Marketing Center

I am a HS senior and UO is among final 2 choices, Georgia being the other. Georgia seems to have an overall stronger business school, but Oregon has what seems like a great sports business program. My dream is to pursue a future career in sports business, particularly in the financial side of sports and Georgia has nothing compared to Oregon's program. However, I’m concerned that earning a degree in B.A. with a concentration in sports business would be risky because the degree would be narrowly focused. If I were to go to UO, would it be possible to major in Business Administration with dual concentrations in Sports Business and Finance? I feel that also having a concentration in finance would at least leave me with a fallback option if I do not make it in the sports business world.

I’ve become really drawn to the Warsaw Sports Marketing Center and I’ve heard that getting a good job in sports is all about networking. I feel that the Warsaw Center would be excellent in that regard. What’s the Warsaw Sports Marketing Center’s reputation for job placement? Do most of their undergraduate students end up in sales working for pro teams, or do they end up working for say athletic departments? Upon graduation I’m hoping for a job with Nike, a D1 athletic department job, or an entry-level finance position with a NFL franchise upon graduation, so if they typically receive those types of jobs, that would be awesome.

Thanks!

I’m definitely not an expert on the major or the Warsaw Center because I don’t attend UO, but my father is an associate professor at the College of Business and works a lot in the Warsaw Center. From what I’ve gathered from him, the networking possibilities are excellent because of the Center’s close connections with businesses like Nike as well as the NBA, NFL and other major sports industries, as you said. Continuing on to grad school at the College of Business would certainly be in your best interest; there are a lot more post-grad students that are finding jobs than those coming straight out of undergrad.
If you want more specific questions answered I’d be more than happy to talk to my dad about it and get back to you!

Yeah, that would be great! Can you ask him what the advantage would be for majoring in Sports Business at UO as opposed to majoring in say Accounting at UGA and then trying to get an entry-level NFL front office position? I’m planning on trying to get an internship with a NFL franchise or at the NFL’s headquarters in NY, regardless of where I go to school. I’m just curious if it is really worth it to major in sports business and potentially limit my career options if the NFL thing doesn’t work out for me.

Thanks!
