Just got admitted to WashU as a transfer student and it seems awesome, but I'm a little worried about the sports scene. I'm a huge sports fan and I currently attend a school with a big D1 sports program. I know WashU is D3, so I'm not really expecting a big collegiate sports scene, but are there students who are passionate about sports? Are many students interested in the professional teams around the city (Blues, Cardinals, Rams, etc)? Is it common for students to go to those games?

There certainly are people who are really into sports at washu - I consider myself one of them - but it’s definitely a minority of the population. You can find people who follow them as much as you do, only it’ll be harder than at a more athletics focused school. Regular season Blues/Cards/Rams games usually aren’t a huge draw for washu students (sometimes there’ll be arranged trips to them), but postseason games usually have a decent showing; a few of my friends and I went to game 6 of the 2011 world series, it was insane.

^ I went to game 1. Not as insane as 6, but still really awesome.

RyanMK sums it up pretty well. Students may not care about school sports, but there’s certainly a large percentage of students who follow at least one professional sport. The only “problem” is that since WashU is so geographically diverse, it may be hard to find an entire group rooting for the same team as you.

That being said, by far one of my favorite things to do freshman year was chill with floormates and watch (professional) football games every weekend. We may have had different teams, but it was fun to rag on each other.
