Spring 2012 Semester Freshman Transfer

I'm planning on applying for the Spring 2012 as a transfer from NVCC, and I would like to know my chances of admission. I didn't do as well as I should have in high school. My unweighted GPA is 3.1, I took several honors classes and two AP's (Biology (3) and Music Theory (4)). I was Vice President of the Hip Hop Club and threw discus and shot for a season. My current (that's the keyword) SAT score is 1860 (660 Math, 600 for both Critical Reading and Writing) and ACT score 27. I'll raise both of those to at least 2000 and 30, respectively, before applying. For what it's worth, I graduated high school with an Advanced Diploma (woo!).

Here's a list of my NVCC classes that I have taken, am taking, and will take and the grades that go with them.

Summer 2011:
Ethics - A (Already completed)
Intro. to Physical Geography - A (and it will stay that way)
History of Western Civilization - A (")

Fall 2011:
Honors Biology 101
Honors College Comp. 111
Applied Calculus 271
Spanish 101 + 102

All of that would bring me to a grand total of 29 credits, not including the four from AP Music Theory. Given that I maintain a 4.0 GPA, raise my SAT/ACT scores, potentially volunteer at Georgetown Hospital, and write an amazing applicant essay or two, will I at least be a competitive applicant?

Thanks in advance.

I forgot to add, I’ll be sending in mid-term grade reports and professor recommendation(s?).

We generally caution students about applying as second semester freshman transfers. At W&M, all freshmen must live on campus and it’s rare for freshmen to leave so oftentimes we have only a handful of spaces (and sometimes no spaces) available in freshmen residence halls in January. As a result we have to deny all applicants like yourself because we cannot house them.

In addition, it might be best for you to apply for the Fall 2012. We say that because we’ll have only 3 completed college courses to evaluate when you apply which means essentially your only academic record is your high school record. When looking at college freshmen, those who we are admitting are those who would have been competitive for admission out of high school. While your HS record was in no way bad, it doesn’t sound as competitive as many of the students who apply to W&M as freshmen.

At the end of the day, you’re welcome to apply to W&M for spring 2012 but you should recognize that chances of admission for any such student aren’t high (you can always then re-open for the Fall 2012 when you’ll have more completed college course work to show us).

Also, did you take Spanish in HS? If so, we don’t generally like to see students repeat classes in college they had in HS so we’d recommend you start a new foreign language in college. Other than that you’re course selection at NVCC so far is great and if you maintain high grades that’s great.

Don’t worry about retaking standardized tests. Those aren’t a huge factor for transfer students and your scores are within our middle 50% range which is just fine.

You may want to consider attending a prospective transfer day this fall to get more info on transferring to W&M ([William & Mary - Prospective Transfer Days 2011-2012](http://www.wm.edu/admission/undergraduateadmission/applytransferstudent/prospectivetransferdays/index.php))

Thanks for the reply. No, I took three years of Latin. I didn’t take a fourth year because one, I wanted to take regular music theory, and two, I was misinformed about colleges waiving the language requirement after four years (I thought it was three). I think I’m going to retake the standardized tests because I’m also planning on applying to UVA in addition to W&M if this Spring transfer thing doesn’t work out. Also, it’s boost my self-esteem, eh?

Just out of curiosity, who exactly responds to all of these posts? I remember meeting Kim Van Deusen a year ago. She was pretty cool, haha. I’ll be sure to come to one of the prospective transfer days. W&M makes me feel at home more than UVA, and I’m homesick.

Just one more question: Do you usually get a lot of applicants for Freshman Spring semester transfer?

Thanks again.

Well if you didn’t complete Latin 4 in HS the starting to progress through a new language is great.

Generally we have maybe 20-40 students apply for spring semester of freshman year but generally we have maybe 5-10 spots at most so the competition is in fact pretty stiff.

And as for who W&M Admission is…well that’s our secret!

I know it’s been a while since I posted this, but does it help at all that I just finished Spanish 101 today and got an A? That’s 14 completed credits, almost a full semester’s worth.

The more credits you accumulate and the better your GPA the more competitive you’ll be for admission. As we mentioned previously, for those applying as second-semester transfer freshmen it’s not a matter of whether or not students are qualified, it’s a matter of how many spaces are available in the residence halls. We often have to turn away some great applicants due to lack of space. When that’s the case we encourage you to apply again for fall.

Then here’s to hoping the numbers will work in my favor.

Thanks for answering my questions.
