Hey guys!

So I just filled out my housing application for the 2014-15 school year and I had a couple of questions about the place I chose to live in. I'm a freshman currently living in George Read and I really like laird campus. However, I had wanted to get a single and Laird didn't have any available so I ended up reserving a single in the south central area of campus- Squire hall to be more specific. I really don't know too much about the south central dorms, so I was wondering if someone who has lived in squire or knows someone who's lived there can give me a little insight into what living there will be like. How are the sizes and conditions of the dorms? How is the location? Any and all information is appreciated!

Thanks!

I actually lived in Squire for two years back in the late 1980’s. The rooms are bigger than most dorms on campus (Well, maybe not bigger than George Read. That wasn’t around when I went there). They don’t have those cinder block walls, which is nice. I had a single on the third floor and it was a good size. One of the singles on the third floor has those beautiful triple windows you see in the back. It is a great location, close to classes and right next to Kent Dining Hall (they are building a new dining hall there, aren’t they?)

At the time, it was all girls and each floor had a bathroom with two showers.

Hopefully, my information is still accurate. I have such fond memories of my time in Squires. We had so much fun!

Thanks so much for your insight!

I haven’t seen the inside of Squire yet, so I feel a lot better knowing it doesn’t have the cinder block walls like I saw in some of the old freshman dorms! My single is on the second floor, in the one part of the building that’s connected to Sussex with only two floors.

The rooms in George Read are very large compared to most other dorms- my current room is 12’ by 15’ and my new room is going to be about 10’ by 10’ which isn’t bad at all, but it’s still smaller than what I’m used to!

To answer your question, yes I’m pretty sure they’re building a new dining hall and another residence hall behind the Kent, New Castle, and Cannon halls- there’s been construction going on there pretty much all year.

I walked down to south campus yesterday to look around the area since I don’t go down there that much, and I noticed some of the rooms had those large fans in their windows. How was the air conditioning when you were there? Did it get really warm in your room during the summertime at all?

Thanks!

When I was in Squire there was no air conditioning, but according to the UD web site, it has AC now. The single rooms are a good size. My closet actually had some decent storage space. It is definitely a different feel than North Campus. North Campus is shiny and new. South Central campus is classic and charming. It is close to Morris Library and an easy walk to class (I guess that might depend on your major).

Good luck! Enjoy your time in Squire and at UD. It goes by way to quickly!
