I'm really worried about my prep school chances; I need a lot of financial aid and my Ssat score is only 77th percentile. I'm really frustrated and just need some advice, thanks in advance.

77 is a very nice score. Assuming your grades are good, aim for schools where your stats would make you a desire able candidate. Cast a wide net, as it is harder to get a lot of FA, the pool is more competitive. Do not waste your time on schools that are highly selective with average applicant scores in the high 80s/90s. Be strategic with your applications.

Do the retake! I know some people say it isn’t worth it, but in my opinion, it almost always is. Scores can vary so much with each different test. I got a 99 verbal, 92 math, and 88 reading my first time, 87 verbal, 61 math, and 95 reading my second time, and 98 verbal, 95 math, and 96 reading the third time. I jumped from a 61 to a 95 in math without any studying! Don’t lose hope!

… But I agree with cameo that you should look at some of the less selective schools along with maybe one or two reaches. Financial aid does make it a lot tougher to get in :/

I am applying to a very wide range of schools which include both selective and non selective schools.

@NChopsful did you send all three of those scores to the schools you applied to?

77 is not a bad score at all! I would recommend that you aim to apply to schools around that range, but I believe with good essays, recommendations, and grades, or a different, but passionate interest outside of school- you’ll be fine. Good luck! x
77 is not bad.
