SSAT Scores

Grade-Gender Total: 89% (I’m female, 8th grade)
Q: 94%
V: 79%
R: sadly, 73%

Questions:

  1. Do the AO’s look at the Grade-Gender %tiles or just the grade?
  2. How do I improve this reading score? I remember skipping 2 questions, rushing on a few, and taking a lot of time on the passages which I understand isn’t the best strategy. I have confidence that I’ll be faster the next time I take the test since I know the gist of the passages from memory, but I’m not a reliable source so I’m not sure where to go for help.
  3. My parents forbid me to take the December test, so I’m retaking in January. What happens if I don’t get my results back before the deadlines of some of the schools I’m applying for?
  1. I would say that they look at the whole grade in general.
  2. I would quickly preview the pasage (super fast skim), then look at the questions, then reread taking fast notes and underlining and then answering the questions.
  3. I believe most schools will wait for the January scores, but I would check on that. If they don’t accept the January scores then I guess you’ll have to leave it to your November scores.

Quick question, if you don’t mind me asking…why are your parents forbidding a retake in December?

Good luck.

Where are you applying, Hhopeful? Your scores might be ok

@lusitari Thank you for your answers! My parents won’t let me take the test in December because they’re not confident I will improve my score in 2 weeks.

@bobd2902 Sorry for not providing this information earlier; I am applying to Exeter, Andover, Middlesex, Choate and Hotchkiss

Your scores are not bad. It all depends on what else you bring to the table: recommendations, ECs, interviews, the ways you would contribute to the school, including potential for enhancing its diversity (geographic, social, racial/ethnic, etc.).

@GoatMama My recommendations should be good. EC’s are average, interviews have not been executed yet, and I’m Asian but I come from a underrepresented area

Hopeful, can you tell me what was your scale score for Reading (pm me please or something)? There are many people worse than you at reading (lingering around a 50 ;- so don’t feel bad.

and for 1) There won’t be a large difference (for you 88 and 89?), so that won’t matter. Girls are generally worse at the SSAT (I’m a boy and I get higher scores for grade). The AOs would probably take your grade gender score into account because they need to keep a balance between sexes.

Hope that helped.

@BobsaidYo Thanks for the info!
