Ssat

The SSAT (or other standardized test) is one one common thing that all applicants have to undergo. Different middle schools have different levels of academic rigor, and grade inflation is rampant.

Percentile is a more useful tool, because it tells the school how you performed on the test COMPARED to other test takers. If the test is designed properly, there should be a bell-shaped distribution in the scores, and 80% of the scores will be in the plus/minus one standard-deviation range.

The SSAT is trying to measure you performance among other applicants. You, for example, did better thsn 66% of all applicants. This is not a bad thing, since the SSAT is generally taken by students who are already in the top 80% nationally. What bshopeful said is true, your SSAT does not say everything, but it is pretty important. If these were the only three schools you applied to then you have made a very risky move. You have to be honest with yourself and realize your SSAT and transcript will not be the highlight of your application. What you should say is “What can/did i do to make up for it.” Do not rely on your interview either because everybody thinks they had a good one. Honestly, if you are not a minority or do not go to a developing school, then I feel the only thing that would make up for your scores are oustanding essays and for you to be nationally recognized in one of your extra-curricular activities. Of course, I do not know everything abou you, so you may have a fighting chance.

“If these were the only three schools you applied to then you have made a very risky move”
Why do you say that?

If someone here tells you that you will be accepted, will you feel comfortable? By the same logic, you have no reason to be disappointed when someone says you have 0 chance.

Some got in with lower scores than yours and some were denied with much higher score. Relax and wait for March 10. There is nothing you can do now. I wish you all the best!

I say that since your score is lower than the school’s average. Your score is not too far away from Loomis’s average, but it is definately not ideal. Again, Their may be something that I do not know about you that sets you apart from everybody else. If you get accepted from all of these schools I would not be surprised. All I am saying is that with your scores, I personally would not feel that my scores were good enough. You made this chance me thread so I could share my opinion on your chances, right?

Math557,

I looked at your previous posts and all that I can gather is that you got a 66%tile on the ssat and that you need financial aid. From your user name, I can gather that you like math?

Just as no one here could possibly ease your anxiety based on those three facts alone, I doubt an admissions team at Loomis, Choate, or Hotchkiss would make their decision based on those three facts alone.

You are more than your test score.

Try to stop focusing on the negatives of your app and look more at the positive. More than anything, don’t let anxiety take over the other parts of your life. Neither your future nor your worth are determined by whether you get into prep school.

66% on the SSAT is OK provided that all of the other elements are close to stellar. 4.0 GPA? Excellent interview? Great essays? Great letters of Rec? An interesting background or hook? You need to offset the good, but not great ssat score, and of course, that’s a challenge, but not impossible.

What did you guys think about the Feb. 2 SSAT?

77 on the SSAT how did everyone else fair?

Congragulations Math!! That gives you a much better chance at all three of the schools you listed.
