SSAT

Hello,

I was wondering if the school that I’m applying to (Exeter and Cate) understand that my verbal section score might be lower because I am Mexican…

It doesnt really matter why it is lower IF it will affect your ability to do the work–keep up-succeed. Lower can mean 90% and everything else is 98% or It can be 50% and everything else is 85%. There are "Mexican"s that will be fluent in English so I would advise you to refer to your language not your nationality. If you are a US Citizen verses International that is a different issue all by itself.

You can also take the TOEFL, Test of English as a Foreign Language…

Thank you! I scored a 75% on the verbal section but scored well on the other two. I am reasonably confident speaking English as a Mexican citizen, so that would be no issue.

Thank you @CaliMex. I’ll probably do it!

@Center

75% isnt really all that bad. However I do think it may impact you for top schools. I agree that taking the TOEFL is probably wise. Keep in mind that the workload at the most rigorous schools can be very intense. Loads of reading and papers for example. If I was you I wouldnt let this deter me but I would also look at schools that offer programs for international students–I think Mercersburg Academy might be one. (It is an excellent school). I just think that it is worth consideration how successfully you will be able to manage the work— if that will have an impact. Not saying it will just throwing this out there.

@Center Thank you so much! I just researched the school and I love it! I would have never found out about the school otherwise. I will definitely apply to Mercersburg Academy this year. Hope my parents agree with this. You mentioned that Mercersburg Academy offers programs for international students. Would you say it is beneficial that I am an international student If I did apply?

Mercersburg Academy is an excellent school.

What is your overall percentage score on the SSAT ?

92%

92% is an outstanding score. This is a competitive score for both Exeter & Cate.

A 92 may put you into consideration for scholarship awards at some less competitive boarding schools.

George School is another that has a lot of students from all over the world and supports international students, so I would look at that as well.

If admitted to St. Paul’s School in New Hampshire & your family earns less than $125,000 (I think) per year, then you attend for free. Tuition, room & board & fees will be covered by financial aid grants (grants are gift aid which does not have to be repaid).

May I ask why you aren’t considering Thacher? Or other schools aside from Cate and Exeter, which, in addition to being on different coasts, have VERY different cultures and offerings… What are you looking for in a school?

Sorry for the wait. My college confidential account didn’t work for a while. Cate, Exeter, and, in fact, Thacher, are three of the seven schools that I visited. I decided to choose the two of them because I liked the campuses, as well as the academics of the schools. I look at the course catalog of the schools to see if there are topics that interest me.

Do you know any other schools that support international students financially?

Any other questions let me know.
