St. Georges VS Portsmouth Abbey

Hello, I was just wondering what was the main diffrences and background on St Georges and Portsmouth Abbey. Greatly appreciated, mburgos13

EDIT: Found thread, but its mostly about religion. I want this to pertain to campus life and academics.

bump.. please there is barelly any info on the abbey

How weird....there was a response to your first post earlier in the evening, but now it has disappeared.....strange.

The Abbey is a really good school--one of my favorites actually. It's strong points are a good sense of community, happy kids, strong academic program, and the fact that it is a school with a soul, or a good sense of values. One drawback might be that it is about 40% day students and that the campus doesn't have as much $$$ put into it as a place like St. George's.

newyorker, good call. It said somewhere 70% boarded, but that source may be outdated. From the tour, things looked modest, not extravagent like st georges, but it seemed like it would suffice. The dorms buildings looked ok from the virtual tour, the girls looked like mini castles sort of. I would much rather go to st georges, but I doubt it as to financial concerns. My parents arent making 500k a year, but not low to the point where Id get significant aid. Abbey does award merit and psat scholorships, which I could get. The small applicant pool only increases my chances, and I am a shoe-in during interviews. Its wierd, but I have always excelled during similar circumstances.

Besides religion, what would you consider the main diffrence? Is the abbey less well know due to size and its region of NE, a boardings chool haven? Or is it due to mediocre academics and athletics? Sorry for the bombardment of questions, just there are no posts pertaining to it. Much appreciated,

st georges has a beautiful campus :)

yes, it is pretty.

well its nickname is st. gorgeous. I also am looking at Deerfield. It will provide higher fa and has a better rep. in my mind. Its academics are very strong. I doubt I could play lacrosse there, but I would be willing to sacrifice it for the sake of going to bs.

The Abbey is a good school. but I wouldn't be so sure that you can easily get one of their merit scholarships. I believe they only offer 2 of them, and many top scoring kids from all over the world apply. It is on par with getting into an Andover or Exeter, with a special focus on SSAT's over 90th as well as other qualities. But someone has to get that scholarship every year, so good luck! And also, Pennington near Princeton NJ has a similar one, so you might like to check that out.

There is no comparison whatsoever....St George's all the way !

beach guru, what is your reasoning behind that statement? thank you

Well, first of all, my son attends there as a day student. Being a native Rhode Islander, I've come to see that St. George's is probably the best private school in the state (although, there are many excellent private day schools). The academics are more rigorous and the reputation of the school ranks higher in college's eyes. Please don't misunderstand me though, the Abbey is an excellent school.....I just feel it's not at the same caliber as SGS. Would your child board or be a day student?

Thanks. I am actually a sophomore in high school lol. I would be a boarder, as I live in Pennsylvania. Did you choose to enroll your son their over St. Georges by choice or by limits? ( Meaning cost, acceptance, ect). Greatly Apreciated.

I'm not quite understanding your question.........but, my son looked at two schools -- one was a private day school (which was his top choice before seeing St. George's) and then SGS. We were never planning on looking at boarding schools at the time. But from the first visit, he just fell in love with it -- the people, the facilities, the teachers and of course, the view (which is definetly unsurpassed by any school). So, it was a matter of choice, not limits......did that answer your question?

I have a friend at SGS too ! XD (oh wow, in spirits of keeping this forum alive i've posted in a lot of threads. most of them start with "I HAVE A FRIEND GOING THERE!" XD)

Well, a classmate. She's having a good time, and I heard that SGS was as mentioned, st. gorgeous.

this might be a little mean, but i have never heard of portsmouth abbey until this thread, but i have heard of sgs since march 10 when my friends all heard their results. dunno if that makes any difference, but maybe that's a view on how famous the schools are lolz

beachguru, sorry for my poor wording. I was refering to your comment in which your son attends PA, yet you speak highly of SGS. I was wondering if you chose PA for limitations (financial, athletics, etc) seeing you seems to hold SGS in high esteem. Hope this clears it up.

Suggest you carefully reread guru's posts...

She answered my question perfectly. I just posted explaining what I meant before hand. I did not misunderstand her answer.

Oy.........

Haha fun is fun :)

I really shouldn't be promoting St. Gs as they are our main rival, BUT I do feel it is academically superior to PA. It is also completely gorgeous, as stated. I have never seen PA though.
