St George's?

I would love to know everyone's opinions on St George's school in Rhode Island. I don't go there, but I'm probably going to apply! Does anybody here go there, know somebody who goes there, applied there, etc? Thanks!

Bump please!!!

I am an SG alumni and parent of a graduate. Obviously I think very highly of SG, the faculty and students. If you could be a little more specific, I’d be happy to give you my thoughts. Kindly note that I did not have a daughter that attended so I’m not too well verse from that perspective.

Were the teachers engaging/caring? Did you feel prepared for college afterwords? What was life like at SG (weekends, dorm, town, etc)? I read somewhere on this forum that the students were very interested in partying - more so then academics. Is that true?

The teachers are great. Son and his advisor stay in touch. Advisor even called one day this past year and spoke with my better half, just chit chat. I remember every teacher and coach I had at SG. Saw my old headmaster this past alumni weekend and remember our talks and would never want to let him down much less his other half. I feel very strongly attached to the school.

My son hardly took weekends away from school primarily because there was more going on at school than at home. There are Saturday morning classes with athletic games in the afternoon. SG is a member of the ISL. Son managed to save enough to have dinner in Newport some Saturday nights with his friends. After four years he knows the best places to eat in town. He is very tight with his SG classmates and gets together with many of them during the holidays. Just when I think I won’t see them anymore, someone shows up at the door. SG most certainly prepared me for college and even more so for life. Meantime, son is doing very well in college and definitely arrived prepared.

SG is not a party school regardless of what you may hear. It is basically a one strike school which is a whole other issue and the jury is still out in my mind concerning the policy. The kids look out for one another but yes it happens and it really takes the whole school, any school, down when students break the trust of the school, faculty and fellow classmates.

St. George’s School is special place and the students who attend and the faculty who work there know this. They all highly value and appreciate their time there. It is a small school with a lot of pride and integrity. The hardest part of St. George’s is leaving and finding another place that is comparable.

I hope this helps. Ask away and I’ll do my best.
PM’d some tidbits.

Thanks for all the information. I’ve always wanted to try sailing, but I never have. Does SG provide opportunities for beginners to learn to sail? I would eventually want to join the team, but not without any experience. Also, what were the dorms like?

The Geronimo program is awesome! You don’t have to know how to sail to partake in the incredible journeys of this 69’ sloop. You have to check out the SG website and the Geronimo name is at the top. Read the student journals and you’ll wonder why every kid at SG doesn’t take advantage of this opportunity. You don’t have to have earned a skipper’s license to race or sail for SG. They welcome beginners for all their teams sports.

The freshmen dorm is the Buell/Wheeler dorm, undoubtedly one of the nicest dorms on campus with great views. So nice, that there was a little uproar by the upper class students when they decided to consolidate the freshmen class in Buell/Wheeler.

SG is awesome!! Beautiful campus with a beach and pretty solid academics which I think doesn’t get as much publicity and attention as it should. I got WL though :/

Thanks BronxKid, and yeah, I’m surprised SG doesn’t get more attention on this site.

I am thinking of applying to St. George’s this fall as a freshman. I absolutely LOVE the campus and academics! I can’t wait to go to the visiting day program as well!

Holy cheese and rice! Is it true that the water surrounding St. George’s is shark infested?! I never knew that there are dangerous sharks in the New England area!

There is a reason the movie Jaws was filmed in that area of New England.

Oh okay! Well, I don’t really keep up with things like that. Although, i’ve always liked Shark Week.
