St Lawrence University

anyone ever heard of st. lawrence? its in canton, ny....thats all i know about it. i was looking at it as a possible safer/likelier (nothings for certain :) school.

My daughter is a Sophmore there. My daughter was told to look at it as a 'likely' and then fell in love with it and applied ED. Obviously she got it. Weather the first year was miserable, but better this year. She loves it and has no regrets. Anything else I can help you with?

Basically, what's the school like? I want a preppier atmosphere (meaning kids who went to prep school), small classes, good skiing. What's there to do in CAnton?

I live very close to it. From the few descriptors you give, it sounds perfect for you. It has a sort of preppy Ivy-esque feel without being exactly an "Ivy." Classes are definitely small. Skiing in the area (Adirondacks) is really great, some of the very best this side of the Rockies. Canton itself is really dinky; has a few fun restaurants and lots of woodsy scenery but not much else. I recommend a car.

St. Lawrence seems like a good fit for what you are looking for. You might want to look at Hobart, Union, Skidmore and Bennington as well; espcecially since the latter three are actually closer to better skiing.

Bennington has many kids who went to prep school, not a preppy atmosphere though.

If you want to just chill out and do nothing on weekends, SLU might be good. I actually go to a very small prep school near there. If you don't like drinking alcohol, do not go there. Drinking is common at all colleges, but Canton NY has nothing else. There is also a ridiculously high amount of drug use on that campus. The education is a great liberal arts education, the problem is practically no one outside of northern NY has ever heard of it.

Thanks for the info guys! actually- I visited Skidmore and it was way too artsy for me. I have heard Bennington is even more hippie-esque and also that it only has like 200 kids in a grade. I realllllly am not hippieish or artsy at all. Skiing is just a plus, of course, really as long as anything's nearby I'll be good. If anyone else has any info, that's great! no one else seems to be looking there...

For Skiing, preppy atmosphere likelies,

how about:

Hobart and William Smith College
Connecticut College
Gettysburg College (not always so cold in winter, but there is skiing nearby)

We looked at St. Lawrence and I've talked to kids who went there and loved it. Have you read the St. Lawrence section in the 'Colleges' section? There are some good posts in there.

thanks! there's only 1 thread with about 6 posts in the St. Lawrence forum so that's why I posted here.

^Look at threads posted longer ago than one month. There's two pages worth of topics in the St. Lawrence forum.

pinkpineapple: My daughter went to a day school in Greenwich. Yes, there are preppies. Canton is small. But Whiteface is good skiing with a long season. The Outing Club is very active. Ogdensburg and Potsdam are bigger. But fair warning there are hitching rails in front of the Walmart in Ogdensburg (really. sort of neat actuallly). My daughter does go to Ottawa fairly often. As I said, it was a backup for her until she fell in love.
