St. Paul's School Concord NH

Thanks Hockey Kid and Texas Chica…so far, my nephew LOVES SPS! Chica, it sounds like you do too…I may check in from time to time with you guys if we have any cause for concerns, but it sounds like my nephew couldn’t have landed in a better place with a better group of peers - I’m jealous!

I will be up there next week for three days. Lax want to meet and tell me how it’s going? If you see me around campus say hello. Okay?

This is my first post and I’m a parent looking at SPS for my daughter. Can someone tell me about the community service piece? What kind of support is in place for the students? How smoothly does it work? I’m interested in anything you want to share!

Connie3 -

Here’s a link to the Community Outreach section of the SPS website, in case you haven’t seen it: [St. Paul’s School ~ Community Outreach](http://www.sps.edu/podium/default.aspx?t=5769)

SPS requires 10 hrs of community service per year which is quite manageable. Many students do much more by choice. There are activities throughout the school year to help your child get their hours - habitat for humanity, musicians visit a local nursing home and play, etc. Many students also do community service over schools breaks and summer - either arranged through school trips or self-initiated.

Way before it was popular, the Missionary Society existed. Now known simply as the Mish. It has always been the primary community service group and organizes Lots of stuff. As Creative said, it is easy. There are an abundance of possibilities, something
that will appeal to any interest. We all owe someone.

I’m new, I’ve been here two weeks, and SPS is wonderful! If anyone has questions, I’m glad to answer, though keep in mind that I am very new!

@Connie3 & creative1: One thing that I’ve observed about many of the schools is the relative lack of service required per student per year. I know of a day school in our area that I’m pretty sure requires over 100 hours spread over the 4 high school years — the school also provides many programmed opportunities to serve so that one could log many hours without having to do too much outside research/planning for these service projects. My daughter even noted that one school’s (Not SPS) motto includes a mention of service, but does not have an official service requirement.

sevendad - when we looked at schools, we noticed the same thing. I know many folks have the attitude that if kids are forced to do service then really isn’t coming from the heart or in the right spirit. However, I think 10 hours is quite manageable and I also believe that many kids do not come from a culture or family that emphasizes service but once the kids try it out, many develop a passion for it.

Hello, I’m looking to apply to SPS for the fall of 2011. Could anyone give me some details on their humanities program, languages they offer, and arts program? And kind of just a general liking of the school… it would be much appreciated!

@school2324 I am a new student at sps and would love to answer your question, even though we are only a couple weeks in i can answer your questions pretty well… the humanities program is really nice, because everyone talks and it’s like a discussion-most of the time- languages- french, spanish, german, japanese, chinese, latin…umm i think thats it? someone correct me if i’m wrong… umm the arts program is really good-i am in fine arts foundations now and i mean all we’ve been doing is learning 1,2, and 3 point linear perspective and were assigned a project on it today, but over the course of the year we are supposed to do things with ceramics, printmaking, and photography-i think? and some other stuff. lastly…even though i’m new, i LOVE st. paul’s. EVERYONE is incredibly nice…and you can PM me if you have any other questions!

greek is also another language

Jasmine: SO GLAD you are liking it! I just returned from three days up there. The Friday night event was SO amazing!

i loved the video in mem. hall! it really made me think about how much i appreciate my time here. I soon as i got back to my room i called my parents and said thanks
