Happy Mother’s Day!
Thanks for posting, @doschicos! It melted my soul when I watched it earlier this morning. It’s sweet and beautiful in so many ways… Happy Mother’s Day to you too!
What’s your view on SPS sports?
Watching them this spring, other than track and crew, the boys’ teams just keep losing. My son says that its really tough to come back since the good players want to play with strong teams. Next year will be even tougher because they’ll be playing a number of schools with PGs… Thoughts?
SPS has never placed much emphasis on recruiting athletes save a few teams. Personally, I’ve always been okay with that, prefer it actually. Despite that, some top athletes every year go on to compete at the college level, both D1 and D3.
I do think it won’t be improving moving out of the ISL, which I think was an odd move, although I understand the reasons behind it. I just think things could have been handled differently.
Interesting. GK and I were just talking that for its size, SPS is quite competitive. Better than most comparable schools and even some bigger ones. Of course, we were mainly talking girl teams. Not sure how the boys compare.
Cross Country, Crew, Field Hockey, Girls’ Lacrosse, Girls’ hockey, volleyball, squash and ski teams have all been fairly consistently strong.
Boys’ hockey, wrestling, tennis teams have had some really good years in the past 10 years or so, less consistent.
How is football?
Watched the video! Love the diversity of the kids and that they don’t look so - PREP school stereotypical, but rather more intellectual and down to earth!

Football has been improving over the past 5-6 years. They used to be really, really bad, but I imagine the change in sports league will present new challenges.
DS will play tennis. He is not an elite level player but will have made a jv team as a freshman if he goes to lps. He is excited to join sps tennis squad. He also wants to try cross country and squash. We liked sps more because it didnt have pg because it gives kids like dd more chance to play.
He never played squash before. In fact, nobody plays squash where we live. He wants to try it over the summer. We found a sqush program in santa monicia, ca which is about 30 miles from our home.
@GoatMama Varsity football won 5 out of 8 games this year.
@bsnewbie1050 Squash coach great guy. Came from Harvard squash. He’s really growing the SPS program.
Does anyone know why SPS does not have a rival? A vs E, DA vs Choate seem to be these epic rivaries, but SPS really has none-
One of the things we liked about SPS when looking around last year was its size- Unlike some of the other larger BS, SPS students really wear must wear many hats. I’ve heard SPS “recruits” some players later on in 5th form (for example ice hockey or boys in BC) but for the most part, we find the SPS students VERY talented in a wide range of areas. When you have a mid size school that competes academically with A/E, students have to do a little of everything- captain of the football team is also on the math team and in the orchestra kind of thing… I think its also why when you look at the admissions results on M10, SPS can be a wild card. They are looking for something very different than say E/A who I think sometimes have the ability to pigeonhole due to their size- And as mentioned before, there are no PG’s. Deerfield has a similar size and well rounded vibe- although my personal opinion is that DA is much more focused on sports-
Summer break has started around here! Hope copperboomkid can stay focused and stay off social media long enough to make it to the finish line. Hard when all of your friends from home are at the beach or pool!
My son’s selection of Hot Glass was rejected. They said it isn’t open to incoming Third Formers. My son is so disappointed! He doesn’t want to take any other art. Will it be weird if he just postpones art until he can take that class as an upperclassman?
Doesn’t he have to take 3 art classes at some point anyway? There aren’t any other classes he wants to take?
Yes, 3 art classes are required for graduation.
I don’t think it’s weird to wait to take a class, but he might want to try something else in the meantime. Art is a great way to meet fellow classmates- and as goatmama said, with 3 art requirements, many students like to get it out of the way just in case they want to add something else to their schedule in the following years- like a hum elective, extra sciences or computer classes. What about photography? SPS is a big school and unfortunately, 3rd and 4th formers are low down on the totem pole. Many of the amazing electives 3rd/4th formers are “dying” to take they must “earn” with strong grades and being in 5th or 6th forms.
Plus, the hot glass is a new offering at the school. It doesn’t surprise me that there is huge interest.
Congrats to SPS crew! Women swept gold @ at New England Rowing Championship in 1st, 2nd and 3rd boats! Men’s 1st boat won silver and men’s 2nd boat came in 4th.
Will also give recognition to the hard work of the SPSBC this weekend. They had the amazing opportunity to dance excerpts from the Twyla Tharp Company & the Merce Cunningham Trust. (Both renowned modern choreographers ) As well as works done with guest choreographer Marius Petipa (ballet)
Meanwhile the St. Paul’s report & the Owen Labrie affair converge:

Also making the national news, like the Choate report:

Wonder what the reaction to all this is among current parents?
