St. Paul's School Concord NH

You received the packet? Just out of curiosity what's actually in it. They already sent the FA and letter of acceptance in the mail. Is it full of contracts and things of that matter?

thank you Creative 1 for your answer. The packet contained the usual, contracts , revisit schedule, course offerings. Just forms and more forms.

I feel like sending a rude letter to SPS about why they waitlisted me...

sorry that was immature... but really though

It's very subjective Benevolent. Look at the post and see the one school my son was waitlisted, and his Maternal grandfather is an alumni from there, played football there then went to Yale and did the same. Go figure? Take what you got and make the best of it.

mpicz: I AM SO THRILLED FOR YOU. I fondly recall talking to you about SPS way back before you even met Yuri. So glad you stepped up and then they stepped up for you. Nothing worse that having a dream you can't afford. Just do your best when you get there. OK? Smile!!!! and pat yourself on the back!

sk8: SPS will decide for her. My son had a 100+ average in Honors math going to SPS. They assigned him to regular in 3rd form. He did well and they moved him to Honors the past two years. There are lots of kids from other countries that are ahead of Americans, esp in math.

benevolent4them: I am hoping for you to get off the list! Know how it feels. Tell the school that you REALLY want to go. Some people will change their minds. I know a few here who were accepted but sound like they will not go, and a number of waitlisted kids that have already accepted other schools. So if you are serious, sit tight and hope.

Hi all!! My D admitted to SPS and I'm very impressed with their core curriculum, especially there emphasis on the Humanities, something I greatly benefited from in college. I have some reservations, however, concerning distance (Is it true they have regular buses to Boston and NYC?) safety, and supervision (lack of structure, lax dorm sign in, no lights out policy, etc). Any alumni, student or parent care to share their experiences or thoughts with me?

Skafe, congrats to your daughter. You will have to decide if SPS is too far from home for you. However, I think you have little to worry about re safety and supervision. It is true that SPS has fewer "rules" than some other schools as the "freedom with responsibility" motto is taken very seriously. As a parent of a 3rd Form boy, it has been an interesting year as our biggest challenge is getting our son to manage his sleep and free time. He realized quickly that he was facing a challenge of personal organization and tapped into the resources the school offers. We got his second term grades and letter from his advisor. The thing that amazed my wife and I is how well he and the other teachers know our son. Net, the school allows a lot of freedom but there are many resources at hand. A student in danger of failing a class gets assigned to study hall and can get tutoring. I liken the school to a tightrope but one in which there are many spotters to avoid fatalities. My take is that if our son learns to manage himself in line with SPS expectations then he will have organizational skills to carry him through life.

I don't know about any regular buses to NYC or Boston except for the ones that take the kids back and forth during breaks to visit their families. It's not a regular thing. The buses go to Logan Airport, Manchester Airport, Manhattan, various stops in CT and the NYC airports.

It isn't overly strict with rules but there is check-in every night that is not lax. Internet shuts off at midnight but no lights out. I echo what nhsportsdad says - there are definitely safety nets in place if needed. A child may stumble now and then at the beginning but the vast majority figure it out and the resources are there to help them.

i would definitely attend the revisit and encourage you to ask all your questions. The school will explain their philosophy and you can see if it will fit for your child.

In most instances, I do feel the admissions committee does a good job at considering an applicant's maturity when making their selections.

FYI, The Concord Coach Link will show you (here and the prior page), YES there are buses that go every hour to Boston from Concord (you can also go North). They stop at South Station (downtown) and from there Metro to anywhere (<a href="http://www.concordcoachlines.com/concord_boston_bus_schedule_0109.htm%5B/url%5D">http://www.concordcoachlines.com/concord_boston_bus_schedule_0109.htm</a>), or continue on to Logan Airport.

I will agree with creative and add, that if you do not trust your teen, then do not let they go to ANY boarding school. They need some maturity.

Oy, waitlist is daunting....
SPS was S first choice, but is just as happy with 2nd choice.

It will be interesting to see how many if any get off the waitlist.

oy is right! i just posted on another thread that i know of 2 legacy students with strong credentials that are waitlisted also.

I'm just going to move on. SPS was definily one of my favorite schools, but I love so many other schools too! I do wonder though. Exeter, Andover, Hotchkiss, Groton, and Middlesex all saw something promising in me that SPS clearly didn't. Perhaps it was my scores (82% and 86%.) I doubt it was my interviews, because I felt like I absolutely bombed my Andover interview and I am in there. I also spent four days during Christmas break writing my SPS essays! They were amazing compared to my Andover and Exeter essays...

I would be interested to call the admission office to see what had gone wrong. Maybe a recruit or a legacy needed in... maybe they just didn't like me?

Actually this is the update. I found out chicky315 is my daughter lol.

I sent this to Skafe, but others may be interested. It is link to the Vacation travel information. Yes, SPS operates buses to Manchester, Boston, Connecticut and NY. If you can't pick up your kids, these buses are easy. For us, it stops 10 minutes from home, but they also get you to bus and train stations. <a href="https://www.sps.edu/ftpimages/36/download/download_group4243_id373454.pdf%5B/url%5D">https://www.sps.edu/ftpimages/36/download/download_group4243_id373454.pdf</a> Obviously this will not apply for next year.

I think NHsportsdad and Creative1 answered the questions about safety & supervision. The system works.

Haha you found out she was you daughter. Pretty cool.

hey, I'm on the CC group on FB! So add me!

hmm, people accepted by exeter or andover or both seem to be waitlisted by sps

i was really surprised i got exeter and andover but waitlisted by SPS and Choate, especially with my hockey hook, i already got offered to play varsity by sophmore year at andover and exeter, so im surprised sps and choate didnt pick up on that.

They probably didn't need Hockey players, or they were getting some better ones. Exeter and Andover may have seen zero hockey players apply and that boosted your value.

bleh. sports. i hate sports.

Rather, i hate PLAYING sports. WATCHING them is fun.
