St. Paul's School Concord NH

To convince my mom, with the help of a few java teachers, I made a website "XXX school GPA" to "XXX Boarding School GPA". She thought it was real and believed it.

Most of these top notch boarding schools are the equivalent of an honors class composed of talented kids from around the country and the world. None of you would be admitted if the school did not think you could handle it, but some will not live up to that. Some will not be able to exercise the necessary self-discipline. And some will find more imaginative ways to screw up. But all of you have the ability. I suspect the best part will be the exchanges in and out of class with a wonderful group of peers with a multitude of differing talents, experiences and strengths. Get to know your peers.

Nice approach principalviola!

Do the grades come with written comments?

You get "inside" grades in the middle of each of the three terms. Those have grades and comments from each teacher. It gives the teen a chance to make a 'course correction' if needed. Then you get final term grades. Those do not have teacher comments, but usually have comments from the teen's advisor. Each advisor has a small number of students and usually knows them from the dorm as well as the classroom, the athletic field and extracurricular activities. That advisor will know much more about your teen than at a public or day school advisor.

I was told at one point that 1-2 times a year each student is the topic of a full faculty discussion. An advantage of the size is SPS is still small enough for the faculty to get to know almost everyone. No, the ballet teacher may not know a student doing Advanced Studies in science, but you would be amazed at how much they do get to know. It IS a family.

My son's current math teacher was my math teacher 40 years ago! That is a bit unusual, but still most of there teachers have seen a lot of students. They are good judges of abilities, study habits, interests, character, pressures etc. It is easy to go to a faculty member's house or apartment at night and ask questions about the homework (or at the dinner table). THAT is far different than what you may be used to.

Hmm..So I can turn in an essay for Humanities and it get back with a "High Honors" on the top of the paper?

Yeah, I am going to need to get good study habits.

In my current school I get an easy 98-110 (UW) with 20-40 minutes of work each night. I usually do not stay up later than 10/11 and do not need to study for tests...

The unfortunate thing is I am in classes all two to three grades above, and honors.

Summer programs are nice though, I went to one at the university and had 4 hours of sleep each night for two weeks straight. We had like six hours of hw. I plan on doing that to transition out of this hell.

My Mom would not/could not believe that grades were so hard to get.

In one of my classes, precal, I got an outlier score on the test... Instead of curving to top score he decided to curve to second score. I ended up getting a 146... Epically stupid...

yeh, i graduated out of pre-al, because on the "placement test" i beat the teachers score hahah

she said there's a max score of 18 on the test, and i got a 19. so i asked and she said, i guess you beat me, we need to talk to your counselor lol

I wanted to skip precal but some stupid regulation...

Bullcrap

yeh, my school wont let me go past geometry... its algebra, geometry, algebra 2, precal, calA, calB......... i skipped over algebra and got moved to honors geo, and algebra 2 is nothign more then 1 more step added to algebra... i want to try to start in 310 or w/e at exeter.

If I go to Milton I'll be done with every aspect of math by Junior year. By every aspect I mean through MV cal, Abstract Alg, Linear, Alg.

Back to the discussion on supervision and safety at SPS. I spent a whole Saturday night in the Common room at one of the dorms with the on duty advisor that night (she is someone I know). I was impressed that she was in the common room all evening. Some students joined her (us, she introduced me to most) watched TV, chatted; others were in and out returning from the Rectory, getting dressed up for a themed dance, etc. etc. She had relevant conversations with several of students, "how're play rehersals going?" etc. The phone rang, it was an advisor who was doing the same thing in another dorm asking if one of the kids in her dorm could stay over night with one of the kids in this dorm. yes, ok...This name was added to the check in list.
Others kids returned only at check in, each said hello, made sure they were checked in, etc. One returned 3 minutes after curfew and was given "early Check" for the next night.
This whole scene impressed me, reminded me a bit of checking in with me mom as she watched the 11 oclock news and my brothers and I returned from various evening outings (summer and vacation time.)
I went to SPS and this was very different in my day. Our advisors were always in their own apartment/home and we went there to check in. Having the advisor be right in the common rooms meant she/he was very much a part of the evening experience.

This is apparently the way it is in each dorm every night.

...thats great prince and we30. But ya this is the St Paul's thread. But incase anyone didnt't see the question. Will papers be given back with "High Honors" or "Honors" on the top of the paper. That seems kind of weird lol, and I come from a school where I get 7 or 6 on top of my papers.

winterset, does your son's math teacher happen to be possible ex-cia,paratrooper,etc,etc? he is one amazng man.

mpicz: Yes it might say "HH". You will get used to it.

catg: No, but I know the guy you are talking about! He an interesting master (or am I dated)! Went to the arctic on a soviet ice breaker, likes shooting...and the stuff you mentioned. Sent me a cool article about Pi two years ago, but that's another story. No the one I am referring to is the Senior Master, went to Harvard. Know him?

i was waitlisted and im a girl who applied for sophmore year

Winterset - what's your impression of how many students get straight HHs in a given form per year? I'd speculate maybe 2-4 if that? And do you have an idea of the grade average? Someone once told me H or H- average but wasn't sure if that was true or not.

you can literally substitute the grades hand in hand.... HH=A H=B HP=C ... so on... and yeh principalviola, i think all the schools just go to Abstract... ill probably start at 310(precalc) and finish at 600 (abstract alg.) they are 2nd or 3rd year college classes... my sister did this an no longer requires mathematics at University of Chicago. everything becomes theoretical afterwards, set theory and then string theory sciences or somethign rather

I think I'll be done with math thereafter. I do not plan on going into a math major or minor and I do not believe for the majors at hand I will need anything more. As a matter of fact MV/Lin alg/Abs Ang are likely well beyond the level of mathematical expertise required.
