Thanks, Winterset. SPS is a special place. Unfortunately, real life intrudes everywhere including Millville. The Board and Rector did the right thing in light of the need to protect the students. I had a nice chat with the Rector when my son was confirmed at Easter Vigil. His commitment to the school is one of the things that makes it special. This had to be a tough call for him and I need be sure to keep the Rector (and others involved) in my prayers.

it is really too bad, but its good that sps doesnât have any tolerance for that type of behavior. The whole tutoring session at his âprivate residenceâ is a little weird, but I think being able to visit your teacherâs house with questions is a real part of the community at sps. does anyone think that allowance of visiting teachers might be changed in some way because of this?

Well many schools have the same policy I doubt it will change. I know at Deerfield and Exeter my tour guides told me you could go to your teachers residence whenever you want.

But anywayâŠare we suppose to be receiving a packet sometime this month?

The word on th street is August 1st we get the packageâŠ

Nothing till august? Ok, idk why I thought we got something in June.

haha i thought they were going to come earlier too, but its no big deal. Iâm just insanely curious as to what my dorm will be/ seeing the directory :p

Where is the list of 9th grade summer reading?

Judging by the time line of how things happened last year, parents will get a package sometime near the end of june with their password for parent portal. You will be able to see summer reading amongst other things from their. Then the portal is updated throughout the summer

Thanks! I have him reading the school wide required book already. Does he need to take notes as he reads or is it a casual discussion this fall on it?

Well judging by last year entering 3rd formers again, it looks like they had a summer assignment on the book they had to read. So I guess itâs up to your sons discretion.

For the school-wide book, itâs just a casual discussion in class and a speaker comes in and talks about itâŠI think we had a little assessment on it, but nothing big.

Sitting here reading the May 30th print Version of The Pelican, I thought a summary of the articles might be of interest. Articles include:
âA Letter to the Form of 2009â - a good bye letter from a 5th former.
âNewb or not? When does it endâ - an article about when new students lose newb status. One comment was that it stops âwhen they slip up and call SPS âhomeâ by accidentâ.
** âISP: Make It Your Ownâ** - about (mostly off-campus) Independent Study Projects. âFuture Reflections: StudCo One-Ohâ About next yearâs Student Council
âDorm, Sweet Dormâ - about the housing system
âAll Packed Up and Ready to Goâ - about year end packing and storage
âThe Slang of Yonder Yearsâ Current SPS slang includes terms like frelk, score and Ting the D. But SPS has always had its own private slangâŠ
âWatch Your Back: The Merge Sagaâ About the Merge game on campus this spring. âConcord Ice Cream Reviewâ - A review of 4 ice cream places in town.
âIn Defense of the Damâ About the student tradition of swimming at the Dam and the Schoolâs efforts to prohibit it for safety.
âNightime Birdwatching and Listening Societyâ - the story behind one studentâs fanciful experience establishing a new club⊠and getting free pizza.
**âSeated Meal: Is it Worth it?â ** A discussion of pros and cons of formal seated dinners.

Several others and finally, my back page favorite.

âSt. Paulâs By the Numbers: Four Years at SPSâ A humorous compendium of a long assortment of statistics for a 4 year student at SPS, including:
1,158 Miles walking to classes. The same as walking from Concord to Jacksonville, Fla.
18 The number of times âbaggedâ
1.5 the number of times computer broken.
26,400 the number of calories from poppy seed cake at the Rectory.
924 Number of times checked in with your advisor.
2,376 Number of meals eaten in the Upper (do Not call it Coit).
** 660 The number of Chapel services attended.
** 1,260** Hours spent in athletic practices.
** 131** days Time spent doing homework (or how long it takes to drive roundtrip to LA 35 times)
** 242** Number of seated Meals attended.
** 80** Number of dances attended.
AND FINALLYâŠ
** â4 years and counting: Time grateful for attending SPSâ**

Maybe one of you should write an article NOW and submit it for a fall editionâŠcould be about the application process or life as a new student (a newb) or anything.

Let me know if you want a summary of any of these articles

fun articles, are they online?

How can I get a copy of your copy of the Pelcian?:)

Is merge similar to the game talked about in the book Prep?

emdee- Iâve never read prep, but merge is an all student game that happens every spring. Every student is given a card with a name of another student who they must âmergeâ. To merge someone you must get them in a room alone or be with them a certain number of feet away from other people. Some people get really intense, but itâs lots of fun, and gives you an excuse to never go anywhere alone

Thanks Winterset, those sound like some really interesting articles!

I have a question about yearbooks, does everyone have a photo in it? or just the 6th formers?

emdee: I could copy it and mail it I guess. Send me the details in a PM and I could do it. Or you could call the school and probably get a copy.

milk&cookies: No they do not seem to be online. Looks like the students post them when and if they get to it. The online edition is totally different.

Chicky315: Unless the yearbook has changed (it has been 38 years for me!), it is designed for the seniors but has team pics and pics of clubs and then lots of others. Can someboby give a more current comment?

Re: Yearbook - Seniors get about 1/2 a page I think? There is a group pic of each dorm, sports teams, clubs, etc. Lots of candids as well.

emdee itâs exactly the same thing, yes. just one of many, many things in the book that were almost scarily true of boarding schools in their accuracy.

as for the pelican, iâm of the opinion that the farther away it gets from spaluts-style honesty, the worse it gets. not that it was ever that brutally honest (or couldâve been without being silenced,) but sometimes i can almost feel the student who wrote an opinion piece cringing under the silent censorship of the faculty members who, to be honest, have far too much control over the kidâs future than they ever should. if only they could say what they truly feel instead of having to worry about offending an authority figure. itâs a shame.

but this issue was quite good, i must say.

Believe me, the student body feels the same way.

If a writer submits anything that is too controversial, the editors will actually go and change it.

Most of the articles in the Pelican tend to be fake, although I always enjoy reading it anyway.
