Hi!

I'm contemplating studying in the United States this fall, and as it seems, University of St. Thomas (UST) and Long Island University (LIU) is the two best options I have. Which is the better one?

As well as the mere academics, I'm of course looking for a good social life and to meet new people. As UST is a catholic university, does that mean that the campus is stone cold sober? I would be lying if I said that I don't want to experience some real traditional college parties. Also, I'm not religious, but I don't mind it being a catholic university if it doesn't affect me.

LIU I've heard lies kind of in an expensive neighborhood, as well as it is a commuter college. Does that mean that there isn't anything going on at night time and in the weekends?

So basically: Minneapolis/St. Paul versus Long Island. And preferably a good social life at campus.

It's a dead heat between these two for me now, so please help me with some information :) Remember, I'm travelling alone and looking for a place where it would be easy to meet people.

Thanks

If anyone could tell anything about one of the two schools that would be very helpful :)

There are six LIU campuses. Which one are you thinking of attending?

I don’t know anything about St. Thomas specifically, but I don’t think “stone cold sober” is a description of most Catholic campuses. I attended St. John’s in Queens for grad school, and it certainly was not overwhelmingly religious.

I was thinking of CW Post. I really hope not to arrive to a stone cold sober campus without any college life.

I went to St. Thomas and would recommend it. The school is by no means “stone cold sober,” as there are plenty of house parties on from Thursday-Saturday every weekend. The school is not strict about enforcing off-campus parties. The Catholicism is not pushed onto anyone, I made it through all four years as an atheist and I experience absolute zero hateful remarks. Most of the students are very friendly, although more so if you are a male than a female. Also, the Twin Cities are great for entertainment as there are always sports games, theatre productions, art shows, etc. going on.
