Stabbing Death

Our son just text'd and phone'd us that a student was stabbed to death last night - a few blocks from campus. General area was near Adams and Figueroa. He said that it occurred around 2am. My son and his roomates were awakened by helicopters circling the area.

My prayers go out to the family of the student.

Students - please listen to the campus admin folks when they tell you not to be out late, and not to be out by yourself.

Parents - remind your children of the above recommendation.

How terrible! My heart goes out to the family of the student.

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A USC student died after being stabbed early Thursday morning, police said.

The 22-year-old male victim was walking in the area of 28th and Orange when he was approached by a suspect at about 2:10 a.m.

The two had an argument, and the victim was stabbed in the chest, police said.

The victim was transported to a local hospital, where he later died.

The suspect was described only as a black male in his 20s.

I have no idea where 28th and Orange is and neither does Google Maps. We'll wait to hear more.

New report corrects it to 29th Street and Orchard Avenue
(This is west of South Hoover Blvd and north of West Jefferson Blvd.)

I regret to inform the USC community of the tragic death of one of our own. Cinematic Arts student Bryan Richard Frost was stabbed during an early morning off campus altercation, and was pronounced dead after transport to California Hospital. After the stabbing, the assailant fled the scene. The incident is being aggressively investigated by LAPD. I know that you all join me in sympathy for Bryan’s family and friends. Anyone affected by this tragedy is asked to contact the Student Counseling center at 213 740 8742 or Student Affairs at 213 740 2421.

Sincerely,

It was reported on KTLA morning news that the USC student was walking with two friends in an area known to be a "safe" part of off-campus. The assailant called out and there was a verbal altercation. The report said it may have involved insults to the student's girlfriend. There was a scuffle to the ground and when the assailant ran off, the student discovered he'd been stabbed.

There is very little reliable information at this point, but this has been reported in L.A. so I thought I would pass it along.

I can't believe another crime has occurred, and so soon after the sexual assaults last week! There were very few, if any, sexual assaults and fatal incidents last year so I am not sure what is going on these days. I have to wonder where DPS was during all of this, considering this stabbing took place just a block or so from the Cardinal Gardens/Century area where the assaults took place last week. Also, isn't 29th & Orchard USC-owned housing (the big 4-story grey building)? I would hope that security around USC-owned buildings would be safer than this...

Does anyone know where to buy pepper spray? I recall seeing some pepper spray booths on campus last year, but I don't think I have seen them around recently.

[quote]
Within the last 10 years, California state law changed from requiring certification to buy pepper spray to allowing anyone over 18 to purchase the product.

Safe pepper spray use classes were offered by DPS, but after the new law passed, the courses were canceled.

Here is the update sent to students. One was also sent to parents:

Notice to the Community

I regret to inform the USC community of the tragic death of one of our
own. Cinematic Arts student Bryan Richard Frost was stabbed during an
early morning off-campus altercation, and was pronounced dead after
transport to California Hospital. After the stabbing, the assailant
fled the scene. The incident is being aggressively investigated by
LAPD.

I know that you join me in sympathy for Bryan’s family and friends.
This young man was clearly highly accomplished and motivated; he was
pursuing his second bachelor’s degree at USC. As his colleagues and
co-students, we are all grieving today. Anyone affected by this tragedy
is asked to contact the Student Counseling Center or Student Affairs.

Last night’s incident was highly unusual in that an unfortunate turn
of events brought about violence when an argument turned into a
fistfight and then a stabbing. Overall, crime in our community has been
steadily decreasing in the past two years, but this tragic death, and
earlier instances this semester remind us that personal safety and
community safety begins with each individual in the Trojan Family.

We remind our students to avail themselves of the many protections in
place to ensure their safety and to encourage their friends to do so as
well. Presentations on safety and security are given at orientation, at
residence halls, and through the Greek Council and Student Government
throughout the year. Through the “United for a Safer Community
Campaign,” we monthly walk our neighborhoods and provide crime
deterrence information to residents and community members.

The Campus Cruiser system is available to provide rides to students
from 5 p.m. to 2:45 a.m. each day. On average, about 4,000 trips are
conducted each week through this system. We will be immediately
reviewing this system to see what we need to do to encourage more
students to use it, and to see whether we need to extend the night-time
hours of operation.

USC has one of the nation’s largest university-based public safety
offices, with more than 230 security officers and staff members. DPS
patrols the University Park campus and the surrounding area constantly,
and works very closely with LAPD to pay special attention to emerging
threats and situations in the community. On any night, during the peak
hours of student activity in and around the campus, a minimum of 35 DPS
members are patrolling or serving at fixed stations to deter crime and
respond to calls for service. During other times a minimum of 20
members are doing the same.

In addition, DPS recently signed a new memorandum of understanding with
the LAPD that provided additional support to the campus community
through the assignment of an LAPD detective, a senior lead officer, and
a night-time LAPD patrol vehicle to the UPC. This is allowing us to
provide a more coordinated approach to crime suppression. Over the last
two years, we have also worked together to increase physical and
electronic monitoring in many high-traffic areas both on- and
off-campus.

Despite all of these preparations and systems in place, the security of
the members of the Trojan Family is a collective responsibility.
Students are reminded that each individual is the first link in the
chain of security. Please remember that Trojans helping Trojans can
suppress crime in our community.

Again, our deepest condolences to the families and friends of Bryan
Frost – we will keep them in our thoughts.

Sincerely,
Michael L. Jackson
Vice President for Student Affairs

I just drove by 29th and Orchard today with my roommate and his mom and aunt. The Trojan Knights' house is right there and it's maybe 3 or 4 blocks from the KKG/PKE end of the Row.

I was told by a friend of Bryan's that both parties were fairly drunk and that it was the assailant's girlfriend who was being heckled.

What makes me depressed is that some the comments on the online Daily Trojan lean towards treating the surrounding community like a war zone. I don't however disagree with the fact that we need more DPS personnel as well as Campus Cruisers. One question I do have is whether the gated complex from which the assailant called out from was owned by USC or is inhabited by USC students?

"Police reports indicate a verbal exchange between students and others escalated into a physical fight which led to the stabbing," and death of the student.

Unfortunately these tragic events happen everywhere. This statement above is from 3 months ago and describing what happen in the actual yard of the fraternity, in a very "safe" neighborhood, housing prices are 2 million and up for blocks in all directions. And the circumstances are almost identical to the sad event at USC yesterday.

UC Student Killed in Fraternity Row Fight. Category: Front Page News from The Berkeley Daily Planet - Thursday May 08, 2008

So do we now label the area around Cal dangerous. btw: this is the 2nd student to be murdered at Cal within the last 24 months in this neighborhood. the other was a visiting Dartmouth student who was shot and killed after a similar street altercation.

booze, young adults bravado/stupidity, and weapons are the reasons, not the neighborhood or who owns the building.

my condolences go out to this students family and friends...it's so senseless.
