Stafford and Perkins loans - sign every year?

Hello all,

DS signed promissory notes freshman year. This year also he has some Perkins and Stafford loans, but he did not get any notification that says he needs to sign them. He checked his account online and says nothing is there either. Is this normal? I thought loans each year are separate and he needs to sign them every year. Should we contact the school? I am worried they may not disburse the loans in time. Thoughts?

Thanks.

Master Promissory Notes are signed one time and are good for 10 years.

If the student switches schools, a new MPN is usually required (the school will not usually go into the federal database to access the previous MPN). Otherwise, a new MPN isn’t required for Direct Loans. However, a Perkins Loan MPN is required annually (at least, it was where I worked!).

Thank you beolein and kelsmom. That’s a relief.
