Stafford Loan Question

Hi, I just have one small question about stafford loans.

I am a college freshman, and the university that I attend has an all-grant financial aid policy. For the first semester, I was able to pay my bill from savings.

However, for this next semester, I was considering taking out a small loan. Although I had previously thought that the unsubsidized stafford loans were available for everybody, I am having a lot of trouble finding how exactly I can take out a loan.

My question is, if my school does not put the loan in the financial aid package, is it completely unavailable to me? What other options might I have to take out a loan?

Thanks in advance for any help anybody can give me.

If your family completed the FAFSA, you should be able to take out a Direct Loan (I believe that is what the stafford loan is called now). Go to the financial aid office at your school…and request this loan.

Yes, we completed the fafsa. I have found the website that allows direct loans to be taken out, but these are parent plus loans. Unless I am mistaken, I thought that there are subsidized federal loans, unsubsidized federal loans, and then parent plus loans.

I would like to try to get the unsubsidized loan, because I don’t want my parents to have to cosign.

I will try to talk to my school’s aid office, to see what they say.

Thank you for responding to my question.
