I am planning to graduate December of 2010, and to enroll in grad-school the following Fall (2011); and for the next 2.5 years I will be taking out the maximum unsubsidized Stafford loan available to me ($16,250 in all).

My question is: with the "semester" gap (December to August/September - 8 to 9 months) between graduating and enrolling in grad-school, is it possible to defer my repayment to after grad-school? Or will I have to begin my payments during the gap --if so, will the repayment be deferred once I enroll in grad-school?

Thanks

Most loan sites will have this statement:

Principal and interest are automatically deferred while in school.
Repayment begins the earlier of the dates which are (i) 6 months after the student graduates or earns a certificate, (ii) 6 months after the student ceases to be enrolled in the school, or (iii) 2 years after the date of the last loan disbursement.
If the student is not enrolled in a degree or certificate program, repayment begins either (i) 6 months after the end of the academic period to which the loan relates or (ii) 6 months after the student ceases to be enrolled at the school, whichever is earlier.

You will have to contact your loan company to ask how they handle delayed entrance to grad school.
