Stage Management-can anyone help me?

Hi, I'm a current highschool senior looking to major in SM.
since I've currently changed my major I wanted to study in college,
I have no information whatsoever about the best school to look into for Stage Management.
Can anyone please suggest me what you might think is the best college for SM???
and also, to apply to SM, do I need to submit a portfolio?
Also, this might sound as an obvious&dumb question, but are there a lot of competitions for Yale School of Drama for SM and Northwestern??
Thank you!

Conservatory of Theatre Arts at Webster University has a Stage Management degree. Here's a link:

Good luck!

jane2xt, I asked one of my friends who happens to be a great SM here locally, and she pointed me towards this web page for the Stage Managers Association (see link below). The FAQ section has some answers to questions you may have along with the ones you already posted. Hope this helps :D!

University of the Arts has a very strong BFA program in Stage Management

My son will be starting his freshman year at Syracuse University (BFA program in Stage Management). He applied to DePaul, Emerson, Penn State, Webster University, Otterbein, Virginia Commonwealth (all BFA programs) and Mulhenberg (BA program). He also looked at CCM, Wright State and SUNY Purchase.
Other good programs are Carnegie Mellon, University Of IL, North Carolina School of the Arts, Rutgers, Ok City University, Point Park, College of Santa Fe
Boston University, University of Miami and University of Evansville.
There are others I might have not mentioned.

jane2xt, BFA programs generally require an interview and portfolio for non-performance concentrations (design, tech, stage management). Look on the Admissions page of each theatre department's website to see what their requirements are. It doesn't hurt to call or email the admissions office of the theatre program for more information. When my son was applying for design/tech, some schools had very specific portfolio requirements; some just wanted to use the portfolio as a "conversation starter" and seemed to put more emphasis on the interview. Many schools participate in Unified Auditions or conduct regional interviews so you don't have to travel to all the individual schools you are applying to. This information should also be on the Admissions website. There is a thread about Unifieds in the MT forum. One thing to be aware of is some schools have earlier application deadlines for BFA programs than for regular freshman admission. Also, some schools won't allow you to schedule an interview until all your application materials are in. Make sure you check all the requirements and dates for the theatre department, not just freshman admission. Good luck to you.

Yale School of Drama is a graduate degree (MFA) program, so you would need to complete your undergraduate degree first. It is a competitive graduate program. The undergraduate degree at Yale is a BA Theatre Studies I believe -- Yale University is very competitive academically.

Northwestern is academically very competitive.

If you are looking for a BA program -- James Madison University in VA (where I coordinate the Musical Theatre program) could be an option... One of our undergraduates won the USITT Stage Management award year before last -- actually being evaluated against graduate students from top programs (she is very talented! :)).

I also just worked with an incredibly talented SM who is at Western Kentucky University (BFA). One of the best SMs with whom I have worked.

Looking for other people interested in stage management. My son is a Senior applying to colleges. Any help in this area would be appreciated.

We have heard good things about DePaul's Stage Management major:
The Theatre School :: Undergraduate Admissions :: Stage Management

My daughter just interviewed at the University of Oklahoma and loves the school. The school has a BFA in stage management, and it's one of her top choices. We saw the musical "Chicago" and it blew us away-

here's the link, if you're interested:

School of Drama - Stage Management Option: University of Oklahoma

The program at Syracuse is a good one. To get more info, you could contact JudyL -- her son is a freshman SM major there.

The Univ. of Southern California's School of Theatre offers a degree in Stage Management. Los Angeles is considered a center for the entertainment industry. The climate is great and the school has a fine reputation nationally.

ditto on DePaul in Chicago. We know a student there in SM who was admitted with an already impressive resume and he is loving it and feeling challenged!
