Would it be possible to major in Stage management with no experience in stage management?

I imagine it would be possible… but wouldn’t that be like saying you want to be a physics major without ever having taken a physics class? If you have no experience (do you mean NO experience? Have you been a part of theater/shows in general?) what makes you think you would like it enough to make it your major?

My fiance actually has done a lot of work in Junior Theater. She graduated from AMDA in New York City, worked in Comedy Sports, and has spent time in stage direction/management. If you like I could ask her if she’d like to communicate with you.

Toowonderful–
I have worked and acted in a bunch of shows. It’s just I’ve never stage managed or will be able to.

Prezbucky–
Sure, that would be helpful!

Why wouldn’t you be able to take part in stage management? Where do you perform? School? Community theater? Would there be any opportunities to volunteer as an ASM or other position that would allow you to at least work closely with a stage manager?

School, but my theatre directer is very strict and only picks people. I was thinking about props, cause I also have work and I know that having those positions is very time managing

Of the jobs available to you, that you have time to do, what do you find most interesting? I don’t honestly think you can make a bad move at this point. Any experience will increase your knowledge of technical theater. So maybe it makes sense to choose whatever you think you would enjoy most.

I don’t think I’m going to have time for sound, lights, and stage management. I was thinking either props, costuming, or doing make up again. Or just stage crew.

Based on what you have said, I still wonder about choosing stage management as a major (not to mention getting accepted to a reputable program) if you have never done it, or anything close to it…

Well I’m still deciding. I really want to do technical theatre and I heard that stage management is a really good thing to major in that’s why I was asking.

You don’t need to major in stage management to become a good stage manager. Taking on a major in such a specific part of theatre without any previous practice is not a good idea, in my opinion. Why not choose technical production as a major and get into stage managing after you get your feet wet? Being a professional SM is not for everyone. It takes a very specific skill set and personality type to be successful at the professional level.
