Stamps Scholarship for full ride at Georgia Tech vs Johns Hopkins at Full Tuition

Thank you for all your input! We are still very conflicted and I did not mention it earlier, but I lost my job in Dec 2017 which makes our financial situation very different now. We did not receive any fin aid from JHU. Also we had applied ED and my D really wants to go JHU - feels it is better for pre-med. If she were an Engineering major, would have jumped at Georgia Tech. But now with my job loss and the burden of 300K at JHU - really in a bind. The Stamps scholarship with full COA looks extremely attractive. Versus moving to a smaller house, and being very financially tight. We also have another child who is a sophomore at Univ. Have appealed the zero aid at JHU but still waiting to hear back. Does any one have any experience with getting a release from an ED due to loss of income if the Fin aid is not enough?

Put on your flak jacket, @supermom2. When your D was admitted ED to JHU, she was supposed to pull all the rest of her applications. If the financial aid wasn’t going to make it feasible, then you should have declined the ED offer by the deadline they set, which would have been long ago.

It’s time to face reality. Tell JHU you cannot pay and be released from ED.
It is not better for pre-med because they will all be gunning for those As.

Your D will have great opportunities as a Stamps scholar. There is another thread here where a student is deciding between Harvard at $20k+ a year and Stamps at GT.

IF you had appealed MONTHS ago, as you SHOULD have, and recieved a “no”
answer, then that should have been the end of that.
I sure hope Emory doesnt pull their acceptance and Stamps Scholarship, because you did not follow ED rules.

I’d accept that Stamps scholarship…and decline the ED acceptance…which i can’t believe you didn’t do when you accepted the ED offer of admission.

How did you think you would be able to pay for JHU with NO aid…at all? Did you accept that admission offer? If so…time to withdraw and be realistic about your financial situation.

In addition, being a Stamps Scholar is quite an honor. Getting accepted to medical school is tied to GPA, and MCAT score, and your kid can certainly do that as a Stamps Scholar with no undergrad debt.

Remember too…that if she eventually goes to medical, school…the LAST thing she will need is huge debt from JHU…or anywhere else…because believe me…she will, have loans, loans, loans loans and more loans for medical school.

She will have support as a Stamps scholar.
And stipends for research and study abroad etc

She will be a standout, one of a few selected Stamps scholars a year.

Thank you for all your comments and suggestions, and I appreciate the time you took to read posts on this discussion and offer your thoughts and opinions.

So what is your daughter going to do?
