Standardized testing? Is it necessary?

I've always been okay with a couple of weeks of standardized testing. Annoying, unnecessary, but I never questioned it. And, of course, the district will not give an excused absence during that period. But, this year they have set aside over a MONTH of PSSA testing (we're in PA). I am flabbergasted. I mean, isn't that ridiculous? Should this really take up 1/9 of the school year? Is all of this testing necessary? Is it improving our schools and students in any way???

Thoughts? I am so mad right now.

The people who run the [The National Center for Fair & Open Testing | FairTest](http://www.fairtest.org) website can help you get in touch with individuals and groups who are lobbying for more useful and rational testing systems.

It sounds like you are complaining about state level testing which is dictated by the state and could be used to support funding from the federal gov’t. You really need to take this up with your elected officials (at all levels).
