Stanford ($45000/yr) or University of Toronto ($6000/yr) HELP ME DECIDE!

Now I’m in a dilema of choosing between Stanford and University of toronto. I would have definitely go for Stanford if it weren’t for the costs.

Stanford: Cost around $45000/year, NO AID, NOthing.

University of Toronto: $13000/year, PLUS $3000 scholarship (i may get even more from the college if i go there).

btw, we do have the money for stanford, but still it looks expensive to me.

Please, I need your input. Where would you go if you were me?

stanford is awesome. If you go there and you feel the money is worth it, than i think you should do it. Once I stepped foot on campus I knew that Stanford was worth every penny. follow your heart I guess, but dont only go for the prestige

if you can afford it, there is really nothing more to say

Not even close-Stanford for sure.

I think that the people you most need to be talking this out with is your parents since this is going to have to be a family decision.
If your parent can write you check to cover the $180,000 Cost to Attend, and have no problem doing so then go for it. If you are going to have to meet this cost by way of massive debt, for both you and your parents then you have to also decide if you have to have 6 figures of debt at 22 years old.

UToronto is a really good school and, depending on your major, you can get a comparable education to that of Stanford. Basically, if you can afford it, Stanford is a better choice, but if you can't, you'll still get a really good education and have a good time at UToronto.

You say you "would definitely go to Stanford if it weren't for the costs" and "we do have the money". Yes, it is expensive, and there is no way to guarantee one experience over another. If you choose Toronto, your life will not be ruined; nor will attendance at Stanford guarantee success. But if you have the money and you do NOT attend Stanford, you may always wonder if that experience COULD have made a critical difference. For some people, the cost of college is a burden which cannot be overcome. That does not appear to be your situation, so my advice is take advantage of your opportunities while you have them and don't worry about the money. There are more important things in life, and hopefully you will experience them at Stanford.

What was the thinking when you applied to these schools? It's pretty clear you get no aid at Stanford if you can afford it and are not an athlete. So if your parents approved and can pay for it, you're a very lucky kid and you should go for it!

If you are going to work in the US, go to Stanford. I doubt that many employers in the US know of U of Toronto. U of T is an excellent school, but Stanford will help you in getting a job in the US.

i have to recommend Stanford, b/c a Stanford education will pay off in ways in U of T will not, especially if you hope to live/work in the US. If you graduate from Stanford, you will have a much MUCH better chance at top graduate schools, good jobs, and a high income. There is no contest - Stanford for sure.

U of T over cornell or Brown, I wouldn't hesitate, buyt when you get into the HYPS, it's a difficult decision. U of t will give you the academic rigour of any top U.S school, but won't carry the prestige or facultyu/student ratio, but measure that against the high cost and see what you come up with.

what's your major? or intended major?

UofT for me

STANFORD WILL NOT make a big difference, if any difference AT ALL.
You can even be more successful at U of T

IT all depends on you......

Oof. tough decision. Something you might want to consider besides being financially cushioned at toronto- are there any advantages? Do you live closer? You'll still come out the same, but the fact that you got into such a "prestigous" school might have an effect on you. Your major will probably play a part. It all depends on what you want. In the end it all comes down to what you and your parents want. best wishes!

It might not matter much in the really short run, but in the long run, if you plan to work in Canada, U of T is great...if you want to work in the US, Stanford is obviously the choice...and it also carries the prestige...wouldn't you like to say "I graduated from Stanford" over U of T? I don't know if you have any unique situations, but that's what I think...good luck!

prestige is more important sorry.

i've never heard of U of T.

hey man, i am going to U of T next this september, I applied to Stanford EA and was rejected, but if it were up to me (i come from a poor family), probably couldn't have afforded it. but if i got in, i would have sold my car and work 40hrs/week to go to Stanford
congrats man.

Is there really such a big difference between Canadian and American Universities?

I thought Stanford is need-blind and provides great financial aid, better than other colleges at least. I know somebody who got into Stanford and MIT but chose Stanford instead because of its great financial aid(he got a full ride). Why?

I don't think the OP qualifies for financial aid.

I think that Stanford will help you with financial-aid... they just cannot say no... and if they do (rarely rare) then the gov't is always there... going to Canada for UT will be like a quagmire position... since it is very crowded there and not worth the risk.. plus the opportunity available at Stanford is higher than UT.
