This is like my post about Harvard, except concerning Stanford instead.

Hi, I'm taking Multivariable Calculus as a sophomore right now at my school. Next year and the year after, I will be taking the 5 later math classes offered by EPGY (Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, Real Analysis, Complex Analysis, and a 5th course currently under development which I will take if it is finished).

So, does stanford offer credit for this? Now, I'm not doing all this for the credit, it's because I love math, but I just want to know if i could get credit. It seems like you should, since Stanford itself offers the courses, right?

bob, ask EPGY directly about whether the post-calc courses can transfer to Stanford for credit. Most college courses taken while in high school will not transfer for credit at any of HYPSM, but it is possible that college-level EPGY courses may be treated differently at S. You will, of course, be able to take placement tests in any case to determine your appropriate course selection when you arrive, and a solid math background will be a plus on your transcript. (A score of 5 on AP Calc BC will get you 10 unit credits, IIRC, so that exam is probably worth sitting for.)

If you’re planning on majoring in math (and not double-majoring), it probably doesn’t matter–you should have no trouble meeting credit requirements, and the math department is very good about not putting red tape in your way if you need those courses to count for an honors degree. That said, you may be able to get transfer credit if you want it.

On the other hand, you may want to retake some of those courses, or take similar courses. The 50H series, while it’s technically linear alg/multivariable/diff.eq., will still challenge you, and most of the stuff you’ll learn will be new.

Also, the math department doesn’t care about prerequisites. So transfer credit or no, if you feel comfortable with real analysis, you might be ready to jump into Math 172, 175, or even 205A. Likewise, if you feel daring, you could try 215A for complex analysis.

Sly Si, is it your understanding that Stanford may award transfer credit for courses taken at other universities during high school, or was your reply limited to college-level EPGY courses taken during high school? If it is indeed possible with respect to other univ. coursework, whom should a freshman contact to discuss this potential credit transfer, and when should he make that contact? (I’d love to hear that this is possible in practice; I have received the contrary impression from several sources.) Thanks!

I took both EPGY and community college courses in high school. I didn’t try to transfer either of them though; the cc courses were equivalent to the 50 series, and I took 50H, whereas I didn’t need the transfer credit for the EPGY courses (I just placed myself out of them). One of my friends took a bunch of EPGY courses, and I think got transfer credit for them.

As for courses from other universities, I don’t really know. I’m sure it’s been tried, but I don’t know of anyone specifically who has. If you can wait until orientation week to ask about it, ask your advisor when you meet with them to point you in the right direction. If you want to plan ahead (which might be a good idea), I’m not quite sure who to ask. I would call the general department phone number (650-725-6284) and ask whoever answers to put you in touch with the appropriate person.

For what it’s worth, I took a tutorial in math during my quarter abroad, and had no trouble getting it to count for the equivalent Stanford courses for my degree. But that’s a little different, since it was a Stanford-sponsored program.
