Stanford Early Acceptances?

So this year, Stanford seems to be doing a whole lot of early Stanford acceptances, with sooo many people in the thread on College Confidential and A2C claiming that they received the email with the good news…

Are they admitting much more people early this year? Why do they do this?

Also, if they see that a person clearly expresses an interest in that specific university (lives close/contact with professors), would they even bother sending a likely if they know for sure they’re the first choice?

I don’t think that the likely admission cares if Stanford is your first choice or not. There are three things the admission people are looking for:

1.) When they read your application, they don’t have to compare you with the rest of applications.
2.) You will be admitted by most of the peer schools.
3.) ?

Don’t remember the 3rd thing.

It is strange to give the likely now, though they may still do that at this time. A lot of schools such as Northeastern released the RD results early to certain applicants this year. Don’t know if Stanford is doing the same thing.

Stanford admission is becoming less transparent now.

what do you mean by becoming “less transparent”?

I feel like they are just releasing results early to many many people this year as opposed to the “likely” system which lures students in.

Also, speaking from what I’ve seen on Reddit, it is very hard for me to believe that some students who get likelies are “known to be admitted with any applicant pool”. Unless being a URM helps more than national awards?

I really don’t understand this anymore…

My daughter is Chinese. She was likely admitted by Yale, rejected by Stanford. She went to Princeton instead. She was also admitted by MIT, Columbia, Brown, Cornell (likely), Duke, Dartmouth.

@grundeis, not getting an early acceptance does not mean you aren’t going to be admitted. As I’m sure you know, though, the chances of admission for anyone are really low. Just hang on and see what news you get later this month. It’s not worth getting stressed out over, you can’t control it.

They are also rejecting around 85% of early applicants. So one should think if they have the best application already before applying SCEA there.

We are talking about the RD “early admission” emails that keep flowing in to certain applicants (mostly URM).
I’m wondering what they are doing this year because they don’t even call that a likely anymore they call it an “early admission”…

Yep you are absolutely right.
I’m just wondering if the chances for EVERYONE are thaat low, how can they know certain students will get in right away and send these likelies? (From what I’ve seen, being a URM is the main reason why people get these messages…?)

"I’m wondering what they are doing this year because they don’t even call that a likely anymore they call it an “early admission”… "

Well, they are doing exactly what it sounds like. They are telling some kids that they really want that they have been admitted, just earlier than the rest of the RD decisions. It’s really no different than a likely as far as end result.
