HI i'm here bc i want to find my friend's chances for stanford. here are her stats:

Nicaraguan Female
First generation going to college
middle class
HS GPA 3.6 5 AP courses in HS

SAT I 1460/2400 (she will def retake that)
SAT II 620 450 (retaking the 450)

Working 3x a week for the past 3 years as secretary
3 summers of community service in Nicaragua
Tutoring 4 years
Youth and Government 3 years
Chemistry TA 1 year
Leos Club 1 year

Recommendation Letters: Great
Essays will be great also...

Hmm, the scores are on the low side but perhaps she can bring up her grades and improve her SAT scores. That will definitely help.

Extracurriculars are okay. What will matter a lot in her essays is showing which extracurriculars mean a lot to her, why she enjoyed them, and what she learned from them. Just listing or describing the activities in the essays doesn't tell the college anything about who she is.

At this point, I would say her chances are so-so due to not-so good scores and typical extracurriculars. It's not out of the question by any means. If I think of more advice I'll post again later =]

I think she needs to display more leadership, whether by attaining leadership positions in clubs or talking in her essays about how she has been responsible and in charge in some activity.

Yes, I am being on the "nice" side because I'm not an admissions officer and I honestly don't think she has "no chance in hell". As I said before, chances are not great, but they're there. Tell her not to give up on a great education, wherever she goes. I don't want to discourage anyone and make them think they're not capable or deserving of a good education.

She has no chance in hell. Her SAT score isn't even close. Not even in the ballpark. Up it by 700. Up the SATIIs. Her ECs are decent, but she has no leadership positions. I don't know how many APs she was offered at her school, but if they offered many, 5 is not nearly enough. And 3.6 with only 5 APs is not exceptional.

lol... i beat 1460 when I was an 8th grader taking the 1600 scale test. Being an URM helps to a point, but without major boosts in scores (her average per section is below 500, which is below national average) or some major national level honors, I would guess acceptance to be highly unlikely.

thanks crom for info...lol i doubt i'll share all this info with her..i dont want to burst her bubble since shes convinced she'll be applying anyway:its her dream school.
