I have been admitted on the Stanford Pre-Collegiate Summer Institutes and until now I have heard that it is a perfect program, especially for the course I decided to take(Discrete Math). What’s your opinion on it?
I’m in it too! I’ve heard really good things about it and i’m pretty darn excited
@zachezeb oww that’s great, what course have you selected?
My son is interested in this for next year. Could you let me know what you thought of the program after you have completed it? My son is interested in Engineering. Thank you.
bump
I sent you a PM.
I am interested in this program as well. @Hoggirl if you have some experience with this program please let me know!
Interested as well - @Hoggirl and anyone else, would love any feedback
Sorry to be slow to reply. I’ve been traveling over the holidays.
My Ds did this program the summer before his junior year in high school. He had a great experience both academically and socially. He chose to take a course that was outside an area that he could study in high school. It definitely made Stanford his “dream school,” and he is a senior there now. The summer before his junior year at Stanford, he worked as a TA/RA for this same program.
There is much dispute as to whether or not these non-competitive summer programs are beneficial in terms of college admissions. I believe they are. They show that students choose to do something over the summer break. My Ds had done two other summer programs on two different campuses previously through Duke TIP and did another program on yet another different campus that was for college credit the summer before his senior year of high school. To me, this demonstrated that he had no issues going far away from home for college. Out of his residential house of 45 in the Stanford summer program, 7 or 8 were accepted to Stanford. Whether or not that is causation or correlation cannot be determined, of course. It may just be the type of student who chooses to participate in summer academic programs rather than the program itself.
Even if there is no admissions benefit with such programs, I believe they are helpful at giving high school students a taste of what college life is like in a supervised way. Campus setting, experiencing campus food, going into a setting where you know no one and making friends, doing laundry, navigating dorm life, handling assignments, etc.
Happy to try and answer any other questions you might have.
Sorry if typos - in a bit of a hurry.
Hi,
I am applying to this program as well for the bioscience course. Do you know anything about the admission rate, financial aid grants, and if this program is really worth the thousands of dollars? I would love to heard about any experiences. I watched a couple of vlogs of the program and its seems really interesting. Thanks!
I posted a similar thing in the “High School Life” section of CC, but it hasn’t gotten much response (actually, no responses), so I thought posting here might be a better place since this forum is the “Stanford” specific forum. Pardon me if I’m posting this in the wrong place.
Background info: I am a high school sophomore in the PLTW biomedical science program at school, but I am considering a biomedical engineering major for college.
About the Stanford Pre-Collegiate Summer Institutes: I looked through their programs and I think I’d be interested particularly in the Biotechnology and Bioscience program. My question would be as to what a Stanford Pre-Collegiate experience would actually be like? Have any of you actually attended a Stanford summer program or know someone that has? Also, how feasible would it be that I would actually be admitted after applying (i.e. how rigorous is their selection process for those who apply/do a substantial number of people apply each year)?
Please note that I am not actually planning to apply to Stanford for college and I am not considering this opportunity as an “application supplement” to make my college app stand out; I am simply asking because the Bioscience program genuinely piqued my interest and I thought it might be a way to see if it (or a similar field, such as bioengineering) is indeed something I want to pursue as a career.
Nice! We’ll be in the same class then! Look forward to seeing you there!
hey, sorry for the super late comment but i completed the program last summer, so if any of you still have any questions, i’ll try my best to answer them
Hello I have a specific question regarding the engineering program. My kiddo has been admitted to the program. They were asked to give their priority choices of electrical, civil and industrial engineering. However, the acceptance letter doesn’t say which group he has been selected to. And the response I got when I emailed them was a canned one giving me a link to the engineering section which didnt help either. Can someone please help with this?
Thanks
Hi, I have recently been admitted to Stanford Pre-colligate summer institute. Instead of applying to the summer institute, I applied to SUMaC --the math camp—and got rejected unfortunately. When I thought that I would have nothing to do in the summer, the surprise came. So, I am going to choose between 2 courses- knot theory (an introduction to topology) and number theory (deep research into a variety of topics). Does anyone know any further information about these 2 courses beside the information provided by the website? I am a little hesitant because I am really interested in both courses, but Knot theory is completely new to me while I am pretty familiar with number theory. Could someone please help me with this? Thanks you a lot!
I am admitted to the program recently. How is the experience for your guys? I think it must be a wonderful program.
I received a letter in the mail earlier this week inviting me to apply to the Stanford Pre-Collegiate Summer Institutes. I looked through their programs and it looks very interesting! I think I’d be interested particularly in the Biotechnology and Bioscience program. After all, it is Stanford. Just wanted to know if any of you had any expertise in this area.
