Yes they do. My S made it two years ago. It was so exciting. Go Stanford!
…Stanford takes kids with a record and the thinking that shows they have the drives, etc. They don’t really “produce” the sort of kids who land on a list as much as foster the inherent attributes. And give 'em a run for their money, while there.
That is true. I have worked hard as a parent to make sure my kids were the full package. But to give Stanford their due, I will say that the environment and community at Stanford does foster the continued thirst and drive for more in life. I dont think, as a matter of fact, I know that most schools don’t do that, hence the reason why there are more Stanford students on the Forbes than other schools.
Also not sure what you mean by “give em a run for their money, while there”?
Just that I don’t think there’s much that’s too easy there.
Gotcha! And you’re right. You have to earn what you get.
“…Stanford takes kids with a record and the thinking that shows they have the drives, etc. They don’t really “produce” the sort of kids who land on a list as much as foster the inherent attributes.”
Wow. Do they know about you?
My son goes to Michigan do he’s doomed I guess…
At his school they don’t seem to know the word no. He and another kid started a tech student org. Won 2 grants for funding worth $15,000. One grant only 20 groups out of 200 were picked. Had a mentor and learning sessions. The person that started it was a 30 under 30 person. The other group set them up with a graduate mentor, and an intense one week business session. They met with the mentor weekly over the summer and both got paid stipends for their work.
Their student org meets twice a month and they bring in speakers and do activities twice a month… Just got t-shirts made) : They have done everything from building their board to designing their logo/website to getting speakers and equipment needed.
This was his Freshman year.
Their next adventure is they are putting on their own conference this spring and have to rent the hall, get it catered at the hotel and interviewing speakers. Hoping to get a special lead draw speaker…
They also just restarted a intercollegiate student org between colleges for the heads of all the student orgs. I know Berkeley, Stanford, USC and a few others are on it as a start.
This was not him in high school. But there are major opportunities at all schools. Just need to pursue your interests and go for it. The people telling you, you can’t, are the ones that are not.
Wow! You’re son sounds like a real mover and shaker. Kudos to him (and you). Michigan is not any ordinary school. So I hope when I said that “But to give Stanford their due, I will say that the environment and community at Stanford does foster the continued thirst and drive for more in life. I dont think, as a matter of fact, I know that most schools don’t do that” you didn’t misunderstand that I did say “most”. Michigan is a fantastic school. So its no surprise that he has accomplished so much in such a short period of time. Like your son, my son was a well rounded, hard working student in high school but Stanford gave him insight to things and opportunities that we didn’t even know existed, he took advantage of all the opportunities the school afforded him. He made the Forbes 30 under 30 as a 23 year old. But he started working on his career as a junior/senior in college, while he was attending Stanford full time and taking 19-21 credits a quarter. He literally cut classes to work and travel. He graduated with 12 internships, he started his own company and 3 job offers. However, all of the offers were contingent upon him starting immediately, so he literally went to school full time, worked, ran his company. Silicon Valley has a lot to offer the students. I think its probably what sets Stanford apart from many of its competitors.
