Stanford Summer Humanities Institute 2015

@mangoking Be prepared for warm weather. When I was there, the temperatures were in the 80s and 90s, and pack some (not too much) exercise gear because you will be going hiking and playing capture the flag. However, also be sure to pack for cooler weather because if you go on excursions to San Francisco, it can get quite cold, and the nights are pretty chilly.
The program will provide you with a notebook, a pen/highlighter combo, and all the books/text materials that you would need. I would suggest that you bring Post-Its, several pens, pencils if that’s what you prefer, and an extra highlighter (mine died when I was there, and I was miserable without one). I also suggest you bring scissors (kiddie scissors will work fine) and a mini stapler if you have one because there is always the off chance that the staplers that the program provides will conveniently get jammed the hour before the research paper is due.
As for the homework…you will have a lot of it. You will get distracted by the fabulous people there and end up taking more time than you need. However, if you manage your time well, it is very doable. Just a warning, there is a considerable amount of reading, and this reading is often very dry reading, but the discussions you will have will more than make up for the (at times) dull reading.
Hope this helps!

@Spicykins pheww thank you so much for the info! im pumped for this program(crossing my fingers that this year’s students will get robert moore south again, as i hear it is one of the best residences on campus?) any tips for getting the most out of the program? like making friends/being social etc. would you say there is a general “type” of shi students(academic, quirky, etc.)? do shi students have access to some stanford facilities i.e. gyms and libraries?

@mangoking SHI has been held at BOB for the past three years (in other words, since SHI began), so I think your chances are pretty good  My best advice regarding making friends is to just get to know your roommates really well (I was in a room with three other girls), and you’ll meet lots of cool people through them. Hanging out in the common areas is also a great way to talk to people who you wouldn’t normally see, but you’ll definitely develop a group of great friends no matter what. The SHI students are all highly motivated individuals (there are not slackers at SHI), but they are also down-to-earth and outgoing people with whom you will have the best possible discussions (about whatever topic: life, the implications of John Locke’s state of nature, etc.). SHI students have access to (I believe) all of Stanford’s facilities, and you will use the libraries A LOT while doing your research paper. I believe you also have access to the gyms, but the walking you do will more than make up for good exercise, and there isn’t that much time to go work out at the gym anyway. Believe me, you’ll be incredibly busy, but in the best way possible

official shi veteran here reporting. if you’re a junior/sophomore stalking this thread for info, apply!!! it was such an amazing experience and i met so many fantastic people. i had a lot of worries going into the program and came out with absolutely no regrets except that i still miss it.

hi! I’m currently a rising senior. were there any kids who were already done with their senior year in the program? it sounds great and i wish i applied last year!

Hi this is really late, but I was wondering if the 5 page writing requirement is 5 paged single spaced or double spaced?

@Spicykins Do ya happen to know?

Got in for master thinkers!! Anything I should expect? How much free time do you have?

whoops hi guys just saw these notifications! @disha321 the 5 pages can be double-spaced (I sincerely hope this is not too late)

@trynagetthere I’ve never heard of that class, but definitely be prepared for lots of reading and discussion (and a 10-page paper). You do get lots of free time, especially on the weekends, but there are also many mandatory social activities that you’ll get to participate it. I promise you it’ll be an amazing experience

Is anyone planning on going to the Revolutions program this summer? Do you know anything about how the classroom time is run? Is it lectures, or discussion based? Seems like a like too many students to be discussion based.

@ExploringEd I talked to someone at my school who attended SHI, and she said that there is a 2 hour lecture + Q&A everyday led by a professor, followed by a 2 hour discussion led by a TA.

Thanks. Did she say she enjoyed the experience?

Anybody going for session 1?

Hi! Do you think a 1320 on the PSAT is high enough for the application of this program?

It is such a shame that I discovered this program just a day after the due date! Has anyone submitted late?

Hey guys- how much did you write for each of the short response questions for the application?

Hey! I just got notified that I was on the waiting list for the program. Did you do anything to get off the waitlist?
