Stanford Summer Humanities Institute 2019

Do you know anything about the admission rate of the program?

Did anybody get financial aid?

@writluvsar Hi! I’ve been accepted to the Evil course at SHI, and I might have a conflict. I was debating whether or not to attend and was wondering if you could tell me about your experience last year (what were the lectures and professor like, what was the structure of the camp, was it stressful, and did you think it was worthwhile?) Thanks!

Hey @horacce I’m also in racial identity!!

Is there anyone starting a group chat??

Has anyone started a group chat for Revolution (for students)?

@writluvsar I have three questions regarding the Evil course at the SHI: 1) What is the
general structure of the course (e.g. how many hours does it meet a day, how many hours of reading are there a day, is there a final exam and/or paper?) 2) Would you happen to have a copy of the syllabus that you could either post or send to me? 3) How many students are in the course? Thanks for your help!

@alexh123 Hi! This question wasn’t directed toward me, but I’m in session 1 for Revolutions right now and have talked to students in other session 1 courses. I’m assuming the same general structure will apply to section 2 courses.

  1. All groups meet for a 2.5 hour lecture with their respective professors in the morning and have a 1.5 hour discussion section led by a graduate student in the afternoon.

Readings average 1.5 hours for me every day, but that really depends on the day/course/your reading speed. For example, Rome was assigned a 150-page book to read, due the next day. But for Revolutions and Jefferson, the readings have been pretty manageable–at most, 50 pages a night.

For Revolutions (and Jefferson, too, I think), we’re supposed to have a ten page research paper written by the end of the course; for Happiness, I’ve heard it’s a two page research paper. However, the Happiness course does have additional short answer questions for homework every night that other courses don’t. There is no final exam; the course isn’t graded.

  1. There are around 26 students in every course.

@alexh123 Hello! I am so sorry for the late reply; I have not been on College Confidential in a HOT MINUTE. The general structure of the course (if I remember correctly) is a lecture starting at 9 AM, spanning for around an hour or two. Then, you will have a mini discussion about the lecture with the TA’s for 30 minutes or so, and then afterwards, the professor will have a Q & A session about the material or anything discussed during the mini discussion. The hours of reading vary per day, but it is definitely at least an hour. A lot of the material for the Evil class is very in-depth and requires a lot of attention, so I recommend thoroughly taking your time with the material so that you are able to get the most out of it. There is also a final paper that you write regarding anything you have learned in the class with the maximum being 10 pages, I think. I do have a copy of the syllabus and will PM it to you. Last year, there were 24 students in my class. Feel free to ask me any more questions!

@bookworm52 Hi! I am so so sorry for not having seen your message earlier. I am sure that by now you have decided if you are going or not, but if you are going, feel free to ask me any questions!

I got a full scholarship as an international student. I am in Happiness course
