Hi! @okurrrrr123 you must not be or “DO NOT NEED TO BE” full time student but you “must be” enrolled at a degree granting accredited institution. Here is official statement(read eligibility criteria) https://admission.stanford.edu/apply/transfer/credit.html
@okurrrrr123 Hope it helps!
@NSTHETG It sounds like you’re international? FWIW I’ve known of one intl transfer and he was the offspring of Chinese billionaires - don’t want to put a damper on your enthusiasm for Stanford, just want to be sure you have the full picture. I transferred in about 5 yrs ago and am currently helping a friend apply as a transfer…happy to help others in here as well if I can
@thestandard Happy to see you here! I have the full picture I have intensely researched about Stanford.I know it’s tough but you never know until you try.Everywhere I find negativity like “are you mad,Stanford! just forget it”,“you have no chance”,“just be in your range”.These things really hurt although I know it’s very hard not only for Stanford but any top US college to transfer but let’s try you have nothing to lose and you can only do your part fruit is never in your hand. But I am more concerned about financial aid. They are not need blind for Intl students but have seen many intl students getting aid.Can you clarify how many Intl students get aid and can they really reject me due to aid request? Also tell me how extraordinary or their story(or past background) is?Also I gain motivation when I see you and @mjr2013 like people! Can you give me your stats and your friend’s stats who is applying. Also tell me honestly my chances. Thanks in advance!
I’m a different user but I’ll try and answer.
-
Stanford is need-aware for internationals so I think only around 10% of internationals at Stanford are on aid.
-
I haven’t successfully transferred but I think the user above is a veteran and mjr2013 is from a community college. They heavily favor community college graduates and veterans.
-
I don’t know anything about their stories but I’m guessing they’re fairly unique.
You’re like me in this sense unless there’s some story that’s not being told above. Don’t take this the wrong way but it’s absolutely just pure luck to try and transfer.
I hope this isn’t rule breaking but take a look at this guy’s transfer profile for example. He was rejected by nearly every ivy he tried to transfer to and Stanford. It could be because he didn’t have a story.
I did some stalking and his application was pretty damn great. These are the kind of people that are getting rejected.

I know that a few years ago, there were 4 international transfer students in the group of 30.
@NSTHETG Completely agree that you never know what can happen. I applied at the last moment as a sort of super reach and was incredibly fortunate. I have no knowledge regarding aid for internationals, although from friendships made on campus have come to conclude most intl undergrads are from hnw families. Grad side is a bit different. Happy to share some profiles of people I know who transferred in:
- Foreign born who sought asylum → self taught in English while working at the local hardware store → 4.0 in math/sciences classes exclusively (since he couldn’t speak English well yet) → 700+ on the math section SATs
- homeless and lived in their car while working 30 hrs a week and attending school full time 4.0 gpa
- Born in rough neighborhood south of d/t LA, dad in prison, sold drugs as a teen, gang member ->decided they wanted to turn life around and moved a distance away, worked full time, and earned a 4.0 at the local CC with high test scores
we also had the usual recruited athletes, hnw people moving from top 20 ranked peers, and about 25% 5-7 were military types (ex Navy SEALS and medics, to more normal jobs like infantry). The recurring theme is most of the transfers I met had incredible stories on top of the requisite 3.8+ GPA and good test scores.
Im trying for stanford my stats are pretty low. Wish me luck.
current college GPA : 3.66
the courses I took consisted of
intro to psych, computer science (python) , micro econ, math 1175 - first semester
business law, anthropology, marketing, english - second semester
abnormal psych, child psych, math 1275, English - third semester
unfortunately in my first semester I managed to get a B in micro econ and a C in math due to being in an out of the hospital and having a colonoscopy and an endoscopy procedures during finals, but im not gonna waste my time trying to explain it
im taking the act and sat soon
my high school GPA was very bad around the ballpark of a 2.0 due to family issues and mental stress because of my ocd.
as for ecs:
- last summer I worked at CVS to pay for my tuition
- I built up my photography portfolio
- I have an art portfolio as well with paintings and sketches varying from childhood to now I was considered a prodigy back during my childhood but because my father didn't find art a usefull skill he didn't allow me to pursue it in high school, but I have since gotten back into it as it is a wonderful activity for me and something that brings me peace
- made a lot of music centered around edm
- practiced guitar for the last 9 years consistently though I don't know how I would able to write that down on college board I'm planning on hopefully submitting a recording.
- same goes for classical piano and I have a lot of compositions id like to submit especially the sheet music
- I am currently in the honors scholars program
- this spring break I'm volunteering for the student government
- black male initiative (I'm not African american I'm actually Bengali)
- Volunteering at my local mosque
- Deans list
side note - a lot of these things are activities that I actually have enjoyed and I understand that the general rule is quality over quantity.
I have two professors who are willing to write me some good essay’s one of which knew what I was going through in my first semester and how I was back and forth to the hospital.
as for my story : I grew up in a poor abusive home with severe ocd since I was around 4 -5 when I came to america
(I won’t write about this though in any of my essays. Id rather talk about progress). since then I’ve had a lot of problems regarding education due to constant abuse from my family. My dad neglected me and growing up and my mom would send me to school with bruises and cuts on my face. My struggle with ocd and my family led me to do very badly in high school, however, I understand its the past and I have since then I have strives to better myself and to pursue academic opportunity. I have bonded well with my parents over the last two years and understood that if no one is making an effort to fix our relationship then it would most likely stay a bad relationship. So what I did was I made an effort to reestablish my relationship with my family and forgive them and move on. One thing led to another and now I’m applying to Stanford as well as a few other Ivy’s. I know that the possibility of getting in is slim but I’m willing to work hard to get there. If I don’t get in, I’ll consider the rejection letter as progress, because, 2 years ago I was getting letters notifying me that I wouldn’t be able to graduate. I think I’d prefer a rejection from Stanford over that any day. I hope this doesn’t disrespect anyone else applying because I know it looks like I’m taking this application lightly which I am not but a lot of people are pouring their hearts out trying to get in. Happy holiday’s everyone and I hope you all get in to your dream school.
Hi @mjr2013! It is such a great pleasure seeing you again in Stanford Transfer Threads! Thank you for your sharing and guidance during these years! May I ask a few questions?
I am concerned about the number of transfer in 2018. Stanford doesn’t post it. I heard from an agent that there are only 8 transfer admitted – I was so shocked by the information. A Stanford senior told me all transfer students live in Kimball Hall, so there should be more than 8 new residents this year. I would be greatly appreciated if you can share your information on this with me.
Also, I will attend Foothill College since winter quarter. But I’m uncertain whether I will be counted as a CC student when applying. I finished sophomore year at UChicago as a visiting student. Then I got the research assistantship at psychology department of Stanford in summer and wanted to take a gap year to apply for transfer, so I chose to take some classes in CC. May I ask from you knowledge, how many admitted transfer came from CC? And may I know how many of you have years of working experience?
I had summer internship in New York, but I think that matters little compared to your experience. As a first generation, I am trying to utilize recourses and cherish what my parents cannot experience. But just being a RA with pursuit in research career in computational psychology seems not to be unique. You said “Stanford saw you were ready after four years”. May I ask how you realized they recognized your achievement under your special circumstance?
Thank you so much for your help again! I look forward to hearing from you.
Hey @mjr2013 , thanks for replying, it seems like you get a lot of replies on here so I really appreciate taking the time to respond. As for your suggestion that you wrote on applying to Stanford, I kept reading your response and going back to reasoning my chances but was unable to disagree with your response (hence why I haven’t responded till now). I guess I will wait sometime before I consider applying to Stanford if I still consider it later on. I do have another question, would you say the same on me applying to USC as well? considering I would only have 2 classes on my transcript at the time of application deadline.
-Kevin
@FreedomWind look up the common data set for 2017-2018 (31 admitted). Traditionally aged transfers live in Kimball - the rest (older transfers) end up in grad housing. Places like EV, Munger, & Rains if you know campus
@thestandard Hi! Thank you so much for the helpful information!! I referred to the common data set as well, but found the 2017-2018 report indicated transfer admitted in Fall 2016. And the numbers are different from the student Profile in official website (https://admission.stanford.edu/apply/selection/profile16.html). This is really confusing… I like EV! Though there’s such a long-term construction around… Hope it will get done sooner. Thanks again for you kind help!
Hey guys I’m also applying for Stanford as a sophomore transfer. In HS I had a 3.4 UW GPA and a 26 ACT. I know these scores are super low but I have personal reasons to back them up (single parent household, low income, depression). But now I’m at UCR and working my a** off and received a 4.0 fall quarter. I am not planning on retaking the ACT. Should I even apply to Stanford or should I wait for grad?
Hey guys I’m looking to transfer to Stanford for Fall 2019 too! Would love feed back on my current stats! Thanks

In February 2017 I was in a very bad accident and left with a severe concussion resulting from a serious fall. Over the next few months I experienced severe PTSD and psychosis stemming from the fall. My family and I decided that for my own personal health I needed to take time off and I moved to Cupertino California to recover from the injury. In August of 2017 about 6 months after the accident I decided to take a chance and I enroll in the local college at De Anza CC. I think they took quite a few
@mjr2013 Let me tell you that your responses are some of the most informational and positive comments I have read on this website. I have spent the last few weeks reading over your advice through your post history. So thank you!
My question for you (and I would PM it but I do not have enough post counts) is whether or not mentioning how attractive Stanford’s such academic freedom is to me. Although I would like to say I have a deep connection to Economics, I am a student which various academic interests, all of which I have developed passions for with different classes and extracurricular activities. Many people have told me I need to have a “spike” or a clear path/theme in my application towards my preferred major. I know Stanford does not make applicants pick a major and stick to it, but do you still think it would be okay to voice my indecisiveness? My story is unique in that I am a 17-year-old junior transfer student. I had to leave high school early due to family needs and community college has allowed me a new path to get to a dream university. I feel like at Stanford I would have more time to take a breadth of courses and then be able to decide on a major. I just don’t know that if this indecisiveness/lack of clear direction would be offsetting to application readers.
I believe your classes have started up again, so no worries if you are too busy to respond to this question! Hope you are enjoying your expereince at Stanford. Good luck!
@FreedomWind to answer your first question, more than eight were admitted. It was about 27 I believe. Eight may be the number of new transfers living in Kimball (sounds about right), but only transfers under the age of 24 are put in Kimball. Older transfers are put in grad housing. So while it is true that eight young transfers were accepted, more transfers were accepted.
To answer your second question - it’s really hard to say. I’m not sure what it was about my accomplishments that made them say, “him”. Still think about it to this day.
@affinity79 I’m not sure about USC. I would check-in at their forum here, as well as their website. I truly hope I didn’t discourage you from applying to Stanford though. If I listened to people who discouraged me I wouldn’t be here. If you think you belong, SUBMIT. Period.
@transferszn I hope this isn’t seen as a cop-out answer, but I would recommend being unequivocally you in your application. Be who you are, not who you think they want to see.
Also Stanford offers many majors outside Econ that may fit your interests better (International Relations, Management Science, and PoliSci come to mind). Be honest in who you are, figure out the rest when you get here.
Hi! @mjr2013 May I ask how many transfer students in your class are under 24?
The proportion of two age groups sounds right considering a number of veterans.
