I'm an international student who has been fortunate enough to be accepted to the University of Edinburgh for a 6-year medicine course and to Stanford as well. The only issue is that I have no idea which university to choose.

I want to become a doctor, but the experience of going to Stanford is the main factor that keeps me undecided. Also, it takes 6 years to graduate from medical school from Edinburgh but, if I go the US route, it'd take an additional 2 years for a total of 8. I'm fortunate enough to say that money isn't an issue, but I'd like to start making money of my own as soon as possible.

There's also the issue of graduate medical school. Now, going to Edinburgh means that I'm definitely going to come out a doctor - presuming that I don't drop out. If I go to Stanford, I have to reapply for graduate medical programs and I simply can't tell how that'd go at this point.

Is there any advice anyone could give me? Thank you all in advance.

Take the sure-thing from Edinburgh. If you turn down that opportunity, there’s no guarantee you’ll get into medical school, even if you go to Stanford.

If you are completely 100% positive that you want to become a doctor, I’d say go to Edinburgh 6 years vs 8 years seems like a good deal. However, if you ever had doubts or could change your mind, pick which school appeals most overall to you.

Try visiting and seeing how you feel. Admit weekend is next week for Stanford, I’ll see ya there if you plan on visiting! ;)

Thank you both for the advice. I couldn’t make it to admit weekend because I’m an IB student and my final exams are next week. I also live in Jordan so distance as an issue, too. It looks like I’ll be heading to Scotland, then.

It depends on where you want to practice. If the final destination as a physician is US, Stanford is a better choice for undergrad followed by med school in US but if that is not the case, then Edinburgh is a fine choice.

Where do you want to live after medical school? If you want to do your residency in the U.S., you are going to have a few more hurdles if you are a foreign medical graduate (FMG). If you’ve been accepted to Stanford, you likely have what it takes to get into medical school, but if you are an international student, be aware that it is unbelievably difficult to get into a U.S. medical school.

I’m okay with living anywhere really. Edinburgh is appealing in that sense in that a UK medical degree works anywhere in the commonwealth, for the most part.
