Stanford vs. Yale - Chemical Engineering

Hi,

I'm deciding between Stanford and Yale. Obviously Stanford has a better reputation. However, I also learned that Yale spent over a billion dollars on its science and engineering departments.

I plan to major in Chemical Engineering, and would love to pursue original research. I'm not sure about this, but at Stanford, I will have the opportunity to coterm (either in Chemical Engineering or MS&E). Is this possible at Yale? Suppose I get admitted to both Yale and Stanford, where should I go?

Also, I'm planning to pursue an MBA, so which college would be better (in terms of grade inflation, etc)?

Advice and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

You cannot lose with those two universities. If you should be fortunate enough to be admitted into both, I would recommend fit. The two environments are sufficiently different to make this an easy decision. If you like both equally, and both cost the same to attend, I would recommend Stanford because it is significantly better than Yale in Engineering.

Well… Stanford is my dream school. I went there during summer and absolutely loved it. On the other hand, however, I maybe receiving some financial aid at Yale (none at Stanford). Also, as an international student, financial aid at Stanford during the 4 years is not possible (I’m an international student).

I’m wondering whether it’s possible to ‘coterm’ at Yale? What are the undergraduate research opportunities at these two places?

In terms of career, I want to be in the banking industry. I love numbers, yet I still enjoy the sciences, and an engineering degree will also teach me how to think systematically.

Is Stanford really significantly better than Yale at Engineering? Yes, I know all the rankings. But, Yale boasts better student to faculty ratio. Also, it seems to me that Yale is desperately trying to promote its engineering department. Will that make it any comparable to Stanford? Similar to Stanford, Yale also offers ABET-accredited BS in engineering. But will the ABET-accredited BS from Yale be viewed differently than the one from Stanford?

Stanford.

Equal.

For chemical engineering, I’d choose 'furd.

So why the question? Unless Yale is significantly cheaper for you, choose Stanford.

Yes.

Who cares? Stanford engineering faculty >> Yale engineering faculty.

There are differences in the two, but you can’t go wrong. Do you like cool, sunny weather or cold, snowy weather? Take your pick.

If “UCBChemEGrad” who is a chemical engineering alum from UC BERKELEY endorses Stanford, it’s safe to assume that this is a no-brainer.

I am not sure that Stanford has more grade inflation than Yale. Stanford has a reputation, but it is not entirely warranted. I would say both schools have similar approaches to grading, with the majoroity of students getting As and Bs.

Another question: would it be harder to standout/shine @ stanford since there are a lot of people in engineering, while there are only a few @ yale? Also, will the close interactions with profs allow them to write me better and more detailed letter of recs just in case I want to go to grad school?
