I'm 18 and thinking of starting a small SAT tutoring service. I was considering having students come to my house, or over to theirs. I got a 2110 on the SAT (Math:700, Critical Reading:740, Writing: 670) (96th percentile) Do you think this is high enough to be teaching kids how to take the SAT? What hourly rate should I charge, since I have no prior experience?

I don’t think thats high enough to start a high end tutoringservice. You can probably do individual tutoring for $10-$20/hr to specific kids. Also you’d have to buy a lot of books.

I’d aim for 2280+ to be a tutor. Check if a local tutoring company will help you.

If I were you, I’d try to get hired by a tutoring company. They’ll train you, and probably in the process improve your score. Then, if you’re still serious about starting your own service, you can go back in and take the test again, get a kick-a$$ score, and you’ll feel like you’re worth the money you’ll be earning because you’ll be teaching kids proven methods, not just stuff that might have worked for you when you were in high school.

There is a lot of liability involved that you should think about, especially since most of your students will be minors. We usually tutor in public places like libraries. Working for a prep company would protect you from some issues. It would also lend you credibility, as a lot of parents are not going to want to hire a young tutor. But great score and good luck!
