Starting Freshman Year Late

Hi! I’m going into the National Guard, and have to complete 18 weeks of Basic Training this year. My current plan is to leave for Basic Training on September 12 and return January 25-27. This means that I’ll miss all of first semester and about a week of second semester classes. Will missing the first week of classes be recoverable, especially since I’ll be new to college?

Well, people do call it “syllabus week”.

Will you have online access and free time in the evening to check learn@UW for your classes?

Classes start January 17, so if you miss 2 weeks (return January 27) - that’s a lot.

There is a learning curve for any new school, job, city. Missing the first two weeks while adjusting to Madison in the middle of winter when new student activities have been finished (including orientation) can be difficult. If you could move up basic training by a month or more you would be better off.
