Starting Over

Has anyone here obtained an MA in one subfield of their discipline and then wanted to switch to another subfield within that discipline (which they really have no experience in)? Is it difficult to do that?

Hello, anyone??

Nope, I haven’t and I don’t know.

In my field, PhD admission in a different subfield would not happen unless the student had the requisite languages, and could make a good case for cross-applicability of material (theory, etc.) studied at the MA level.

Well, I guess what I am asking is, is is difficult to just start all over again at the MA level in another subfield?

Anyone else?

it depends on your field and subfield. for history, the switch is possible if you already have the languages necessary for the new subfield. i know of one fellow student who made the switch and his advisor is essentially putting him through a new MA before allowing him to move onto writing his dissertation. informally, or sometimes through independent studies, she’s making him go through the process of writing an MA paper first before he can write his dissertation proposal or his comps.

so… in my field, at least, switching subfields will add a few years onto your degree, almost as though you had taken a second MA, but it’s possible.

Anyone else? Help, please?

Have you asked some of your professors. They would probably be more helpful then any of us.

the question is too general. You need to give some information on the field and subdisciiplines of interest. Cross over is easy and frequent in some fields and very difficult in others.

Bumping up.

The cross over would be from Biological Anthropology to Socio-Cultural.

Help please?

I concur with stickid, consult with professors at your local college or university.
