State statistics

Hey everybody,
I have a few questions:
1). Is there a number of people that Yale will accept from each state?
2). How many people usually get in from Maryland?
3). Is legacy acceptance really that much higher than average?
4). Do extracurriculars only "count" if you do them all four years?
5). Does yale favor sports over other ECs for people who aren't being recruited?

Thanks for any insight!

no

varies year to year. Yale admits individuals, not groups

~20% vs 6%*

Meaningful does not necessarily mean long serving

No

A huge portion of this discrepancy comes from the much higher than avg quality of legacy applicants vs. the general pool. These same kids, when applying to H & P are also being admitted at super high rates – what does that tell you? Legacy matters, but not much. Individual talent and scholarship trumps all.

you can find the number of freshmen from each state who matriculated to yale in previous years here: http://oir.yale.edu/node/50/attachment

this year, yale /admitted/ 55 students from maryland.
