Statement of Visa/Residency Status

Hello,

My name is Plamen and I am an international applicant to Skidmore. I have no problems so far navigating through the app process. However, I find one thing confusing. On the website there is information that I should include a "Statement of Visa/Residency Status" with my application. Then additional information is given:

"All applicants who are not U.S. citizens must include a statement of their visa or residency status together with their admissions application form. This is required by the U.S. government for both international students and noncitizens already residing in the U.S.".

I am left quite confused as to what exactly this "Statement of Visa/Residency Status" is and what is expected of me to do?

I would be very thankful if someone could assist me with this little problem of mine. :)

Hi, Plamen,

If you live outside the USA, you do not need to include any statement of Visa/Residency status, as it is required only of the internationals who RESIDE IN the US.

If you do live in the USA, however, I think it should be an official statement verifying that you do have a Visa or Residency Status. I think you had better ask the college itself.

Let me know if that is clear.

So, since I am an international applicant with no affiliations with the USA, you are sure that I do not need to include any such statement with my app? :)

You should contact the admissions office at Skidmore to find out exactly what you need to do. They are very helpful and accomodating.

Plamen,

Sorry for the late response, first of all. I agree with cats4u, that the best thing to do is to contact the Admissions Office at Skidmore. However, I am pretty sure it is required only of the students who reside in the US. I am applying to Skidmore as well and am not sending any statements.

To reassure you, I will give the reasons:

 1. If you do not reside in the USA, how can you have any Visa or Residency Status?
 2. Skidmore directly states: “This is required by the U.S. government for both international students and noncitizens !!!already residing in the U.S!!!.”
 3. If these statements are required by the U.S. government, why do other colleges not request them?

Hope this helps!
