**Decision: REJECTED **

Date applied: 11/28, I think. A few days before the 12/1 deadline.
Date decision postmarked/received: letter dated 3/27, received 3/30.
Accepted/Rejected at which school/major at USC: School of Cinematic Arts (1st Production, 2nd Critical Studies)

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT Total: 2090 (CR: 710, M: 650, WR: 730)
[] ACT: 31 (if they superscored it I’d have a 33 ugh)
[] SAT Subject Tests: Literature 620, Math I 660, US History 660
[] GPA-UW/W: ~3.3/3.8
[] Rank: 116/561 (top 20%)
[] AP classes: European History (4), Art History (3), English Lang & Comp (4), US History (5), US Gov & Pol, Spanish Language, English Lit & Comp
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: I thought they were decent. I did Visions and Voices and I talked about building an 8,000 gallon pool for my school’s producion of Mary Zimmerman’s play Metamorphoses. My activity one was about my orchestra teacher and his insane dedication to Beethoven.
[] Teacher Recs: All of them know me really well and also sponsor the clubs I’m in. I had them for three of my AP classes.
[] Counselor Rec: She loves me.
[] EC highlights: Drama Club (Historian, Co-Vice President), Technical Theatre Club (Historian, Vice President, Stage Manager for a lot of stuff), International Thespian Society (Honors Thespian), Concert Orchestra (Officer, Section Leader for 1 concert, Concertmaster for 1 concert), Honors Symphony Orchestra (Secretary), Habitat for Humanity, Scholastic Bowl, Math Team. I also mentioned that I work in my school’s theatre as a hired stagehand for people who rent our space.
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State: Illinois.
[] School Type: Public.
[] Ethnicity: Caucasian.
[] Gender: Female.
[/ul]Other Factors, hook?: I’m an immigrant from Ukraine and I’m multilingual. I have high test scores and I sent them all 4 of my ACT scores so they saw my highest points in each category (35 verbal, 33 science, 34 reading… 28 math). I have a lot of ECs and leadership roles in them. I’m really dedicated to theatre.

General Comments, scholarship chances, status info, going to USC…?: fall grades > forwarded 3/13 > being reviewed 3/28 > acted on 3/29. I really thought I had a shot… unless NYU gives me $20,000 more in grants, my only option is either Carnegie Mellon’s priority waitlist or community college. Most likely community college. I think I might appeal… meh.

[/ul]Other Factors, hook?: I thought that being an international student (and not being from Asia) would be a bit of a hook. I expressed my love for USC in my essay and how I’d wanted to go there for years. Apart from that, probably not a lot by the looks of it.

General Comments, scholarship chances, status info, going to USC…?: I almost can’t believe its happened. By no means was I the best scholastic applicant but I thought I was in a good range. Something that has occupied my life for such a long time is now over and I don’t really know what to say. I’m disappointed, really disappointed but I have other options and I know that I’ll be OK wherever I end up (which will be at Chapman!). Its been really fun being a part of the USC CC board and its a bit surreal that the journey is over now.

**Decision: Rejected **

[] Teacher Recs: Wanted to cry when I read them, really heartfelt =)
[] Counselor Rec: n/a
[] EC highlights: Multi-sport varsity athlete. MVP awards in different sports- XC, Track, Soccer. Team Captain. Was manager for my job at an auto paint ‘n’ body shop. Currently have job for energy drink company as salesman. Maybe 200 hours community service. On the Science Bowl Team. My other EC’s aren’t worth mentioning… Really lacking in the EC department…[/ul]Location/Person:[ul][] State or Country: CA
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: Mexican/white
[li] Gender: Male[/li][/ul]Other Factors, hook?: anti-hook: Low GPA and Lack of ECs. Probably could have raised my SAT score a bit too, oh well.

General Comments, scholarship chances, status info, going to USC…?: I knew I was underqualified for USC, so my rejection isn’t surprising. Still really bummed though =/. Based on the low percent of appeals they accept, I’ll probably just try again as a transfer. While I do have “new information”, I don’t think it could possibly make up for my ugly GPA. Ugh.

oops, my math is a 740! typo!

Decision: Rejected

Date applied: November 25, 2009
Date decision postmarked/received: Letter dated March 27, 2010, Letter received April 1, 2010
Rejected at which school/major at USC: CLAS - Chemistry

Stats:
SAT Total: 1990 M: 610, CR: 690, WR: 690,
ACT: N/A
SAT Subject Tests: Latin - 630
GPA-UW/W: My school is not on a 4.0 and does not weight GPA, but my three-year average was 95.1
Rank: 17/467
AP/IB classes: My school does not have AP classes, but all my classes are Honors

Subjective:
Essays: I thought my essay was well-written, and everyone who read it told me it was good. However, looking at how USC ranks their application materials, the essay is second to last, so I guess it isn’t a huge part.
Teacher Recs: I did not read them, but I’m sure they were good, as the teachers who wrote them know me very well. But again, looking at how USC ranks their application materials, the teacher recommendations are last.
Counselor Rec: Probably didn’t have a lot of depth in it, as our counselors pretty much just stick to our stats.
EC highlights: 4 years of Varsity Gymnastics (my school has been the undefeated champion for 3 years in a row), National Honor Society, 3 years of Leader’s Club, 4 years of Blue & Gold Sportsnite (with senior year leadership position), a lot of volunteering … at my school it’s rather difficult to participate both in clubs and sports, you have to pick either one. as i am a 2 season athlete, my participation in clubs was not as strong as it should have been.

Location/Person:
State or Country: NY
School Type: Catholic
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Female
Other Factors, hook?: I did a lot last summer (2009), and I thought it would have looked really good on my college applications: I attended a LeadAmerica conference and a chemistry seminar at my school, I volunteered 7 hours a week, and I also had a paying job.

General Comments, scholarship chances, status info, going to USC…?: I don’t think I realized just how competitive of a school USC is. Last year when I visited, my tour guide and all the other representatives made it seem as though if you really put yourself out there for USC, USC would eat you right up. Knowing this, I attended everything USC had to offer, including meeting with a representative when he came to my high school, interviewing, and attending the “Meet USC” conference in NYC. Also, last year the one student from my school who was accepted to USC had around the same stats as me, and was not too involved with extra-curriculars. Because of all this, I thought my chances of getting into USC were much greater. Although USC was my #1 and I really wanted to go there, I’m okay, and I will most likely be attending UCSD or UCSB. Who knows though, there’s always graduate school…

Other Factors, hook?: Probably nothing. I guess that’s why I didn’t get in? I am from across the country which I thought might have helped, but only slightly.

General Comments, scholarship chances, status info, going to USC…?: I know my critical reading scores are atrocious. I’m great at math…I’m horrible with critical reading. I also didn’t prepare for my SAT at all. In hindsight, that probably wasn’t a good idea.

I know USC was really competitive this year, but I expected to get in after being admitted to UCLA, which is generally much harder seeing how I’m out of state. Oh well…

General Comments, scholarship chances, status info, going to USC…?: To be completely honest I have always wanted to go to a Pac-10 school. USC was kind of my back-up in case I didn’t get into UCLA or Berkeley. But truthfully I could not afford it unless I got significant financial aid. So it is kind of funny that I got into UCLA AND Berkeley but not USC. I wonder if I would have gotten in if I had applied as a math major rather than “still deciding” if it would have made a difference.

My grades are mediocre I guess, and there were many superqualified candidates, so I guess even though I’m frustrated, I can’t be angry at their decision. They definitely worked hard. I am going to appeal though. Hopefully, I can find some tricks hidden in my sleeves.
My status was first received, then reviewed. Then it went to finished preliminary review, Then they asked me for fall grades, i submitted them. Then my status was at fall grades for a good while until the next to last week of March. It changed to Forwarded on Wednesday or Thursday (24/25). Then it changed to reviewed again on saturday i think, then acted on on sunday. Hope this helps future applicants =D
