Statue of man in underwear causes stir at Wellesley College

"A realistic-looking statue of a man sleepwalking in his underwear near the center of Wellesley College has created a stir among the women on campus, especially as more than 100 students at the all-women’s college signed a petition asking administrators to remove it." ...

I really love the installations - this sleepwalking man is great! Not sure I get the outrage AT ALL.

In other words, 5% of the student body is upset about the statue.

Threatening? Not really. In poor taste? Perhaps. We’ve certainly come a long way from Michaelangelo’s David.

My daughter thought the whole reaction was really silly. She doesn’t like the statue but doesn’t think that not liking a piece of art constitutes grounds for its removal. People need to lighten up.

Ugh now are you kidding?! It’s extremely creepy. Even if it were not a man and Wellesley not a women’s college, I would still be freaked out. Walking home alone at night? Or coming across a naked man in the snow like that looking for all the world like he’s dying or about to kill someone? I didn’t read the article; is it temporary?

Well, everyone knows it’s there now so the fear factor is gone.

It is to stay until May, I believe.

It has its own Facebook profile, “Samuel Sleepwalker.”

Just be glad you go to a women’s college. When I was a freshman at Penn 35 years ago, I got to see this kind of thing going to the bathroom in the middle of the night. Although the offender (a Wharton student naturally) was better looking, had a full head of hair, and wore much more colorful briefs!

I also remember all the outrage over the installation of Claes Oldenburg’s Split Button, which is now deeply beloved. I loved “The Button” and kind of dig this installation too. Console yourself, if you must, that this one is temporary.

@LucieTheLakie, well, consider the nickname of the Covenant over at the High Rises. That got comments when it went up.

Alas, I don’t recall its nickname, although I can just imagine, LOL. It was kind of ugly, but I still thought it improved the overall look of “Super Block” at the time (which was HIDEOUS, IMHO) .
