Staying a 5th year vs. graduating in 4

Hi everyone,

I'm a 4th year undergraduate majoring in Neuroscience. I'm set to graduate in Spring 2012 but I'm considering staying a 5th year to figure out what I'm interested in pursuing as a career.

I was on the medical school track for my first 3 years but I've always had doubts and this past year I've decided not to do go into medicine because my heart isn't in the field. However, now I have this void because I don't know what else I can do. I'm not interested in teaching or research, I've tried them both and I don't think they are a good fit for me. I'm interested in doing something in business and I found this minor called the Labor and Workplace Studies minor which is about business, economics, and underserved communities:

UCLA Center for Labor Research and Education

I'm taking a class for the minor this quarter and it's so far very interesting.

So my question is tuition is going to cost me around $14,000 for a 5th year, do you think it's worth it for me to stay an extra year to figure things out and pursue this minor or graduate in the spring and run with my degree, find a job, and work my way back to school?

Would greatly appreciate any feedback.

Thanks!

If your interest lies in growing intellectually and enjoying your studies in this area, then sure! Stay a year if you can afford it.

But if you’re thinking job and money, then taking on a minor isn’t going to help you much in that process. Companies won’t care if you have labor and workplace minor. It honestly won’t do much to improve your abilities of being hired. The only plus I can think of in that respect is that the minor might help you improve your writing skills. That’s it though, really.

No way. Graduate in 4 years and ■■■■. A minor is not worth an extra year’s tuition + room and board. Also, I’m a social science major and I’m aware of that minor. It’s useless man. I’ve taken a few labor studies classes and they are not econ based at all and it’s more like a sociology or history class. That minor isn’t going to get you anywhere in terms of helping you land a job or anything in that regard.

I would advise you to graduate and then you can take a year off from school to either work or just sit around and contemplate about what you want to do. It’s free and you can use that free time to talk to people or volunteer. Volunteering is a much better experience to knowing what you want to do for a career than taking classes.

BTW, if I may just ask, was there another reason for you to simply drop medical school ambitions? Was it because your GPA simply isn’t good enough or because your MCAT score was too low? I took my LSAT recently and I haven’t gotten my score back, but if I don’t do well on it, then I’m pretty much in the same situation as you are.

Just graduate within 4 years otherwise you will in school forever. I see people I know and they are unsure of what they are doing and are smart but are still in school. Its a waste of life. Get it done :D
