Stern FAQ's

mattistotle, what would be a good easy science class to take to fulfill the requirements

Freshmen year almost everyone gets crappy internships, or nothing at all ( I worked at polo ralph lauren)

lol sorry i mention this, but whats wrong with that? is it paid? if so, how much? i'm most likely matriculating to stern next fall. i was planning on persuing that type of field in business. what do typical stern students have to say about this? thanks.

What math courses should I take next year: I have to pick 2 of tehse 4- Muti var. calc, Diff EQ, Abstract Algebra, and "Statistical Analysis of finance"( independent study ).. also, is it an advantage to get my stat teacher, an NYU grad to write a recommendation for Stern?

Get whomever you know best/will write you the best recommendation.

I don't even know why you're asking that "which math should I take" question...you know you're well past Calc 1, which the the furthest 90% of applicants are at; you don't have to wear your intelligence on your sleeve on a message board...Whichever math you take won't matter, just make sure you don't come off as arrogant on your application (i.e. on your essay)

my bad, i didn't mean to sound arrogant. I just want to know what the best combination of the two would be.

on a side note. CAS IS NOT A BACK DOOR INTO STERN, INTERNAL TRANSFERS ARE EXTREMELY DIFFICULT. In reference to about 10 topics I have seen.

lol how about answering my quoted question ? thanks

does Stern emphasise on Math a lot (for international admissions)?

because my math marks in school are rotten (because we have the most idiotic math curriculum ever) but I can quite easily do the SAT Math I & II. Should I take both?

I don't know how internal transfers get reviewed, but math is a very important part of Stern. If you are in Stern you are required to take Stats and Calculus, and math skills are used prominentally in the finance and econ classes (simplier math in accounting). If you are not good at math, you will get horrible grades in Stern even if you can transfer in (SAT 1 and II are at a 10th grade level and below, wouldn't use that to judge math skills).

I worked at polo ralph lauren, i didn't intern. So I got my 9.50 an hour folding clothes. Freshmen internships generally range from unpaid to $15 an hour, although a handful will secure something decent.

CNI, jeez, take two math courses that you want, stern doesnt' require anything past calc1, so do as you wish.

and no your stat teacher who is a nyu grad writing a recommendation will NOT help...sarcasm

woo "hot topic"

you need a recommendation letter along with your app anyway; so why not from an nyu grad who's class you've done well in? with nyu, recommendations can only hurt you; not so much help (they really care more bout the numbers there). but your letter will be good so you won't need to worry about that.

How hard is it to transfer into Stern from a different school? What kind of stats do you need?

It's tough. They say like a 3.8 but i didn't have that high and i still got in. I wrote very good essays purposefully detaching myself from the mainstream stern personality and outlining my interests very clearly. It's a toss up. You just have to be smart about it. But don't count on it happening.

I thought it was near impossible, but I keep hearing stories about people with non-spectacular stats internally transferring in, so who knows...

are you asking about transferring from a different school within nyu? i know with cornell it's pretty easy. i don't know much about internal transfers to nyu stern though. but i believe its pretty simple with CAS because many qualified external applicants to CAS were rejected this year due to internal transfers occupying the spots.

My S is trying to decide between NYU and Emory as his first choice to focus on business. I am a CPA / Attorney here in NYC and a number of friends work downtown at Blackrock, Goldman,etc... which likes NYU to recruit from. Then again, although my S has decent stats, 1450 / 2230, 4.5(w), top 3%.., he is not sure that he wants to spend the next 4 years downtown NYC. I was just wondering if anyone herein applied or had thoughts about other schools for business aside from NYU. Thanks. Best to all. Marc

cornell aem. its a more general business program but its given in a great school and since you're from ny you get to pay reduced tuition because it is in one of the statutory colleges ;]

quick question. what math do most freshmen take first semester?

I can confirm that connections are extremely important - my connections helped me land both an i-banking and consulting internship, both with top firms (UBS and Monitor Group) and I'm not even a sophmore yet. I'm also not a finance major, I'm a CAS econ major.

Networking is the key to success, lol.
