Stern Freshman Willing to Answer Questions!

Jen, are you getting irritated yet with all these people asking you to chance them? Honestly, chance me requests are silly because people ought to be able to look at the stats posted by the university of accepted students, and take the best guess for themselves. Or they can just read your answers to other people and do the math. It seems that people could be asking more useful questions than the same thing over and over again. You have unlimited patience.

@busdriver
Haha, that’s literally what happened with me. My thread got past 45 pages and I just stopped responding to “chance me!!” completely, it’s too much.

chance me please?

SAT: 2320(CR740, M790, M790)

GPA: cumulative 3.88 weighted.
*I had 4.0 in my sophomore and junior year but had like 3.5~6 in my freshman year.
It’s a private school, not a crappy one but in my standard it’s not one of the “prestigious schools.” about 180~190kids in each grade, about ~10 of which go to sub-IVYs with few going to IVYs. I would say if you study hard at my school, those IVY~sub-IVYs are reach.

Activities: I think it’s not that important for Stern, but I did enough to fill up the app. A couple of leadership positions and consistent sports… etc.

Recommendation: got from the class that I was one of the top students. I think it’s not glaringly good but decent.

Essays: stylistically great, but contents are not creative(I didn’t have any of these creative things my college counsellor wanted me to put, but I was very clear and coherent about my thoughts. and I think my essays are stylistically really good, actually.)

Weakness: I’m an international(South Korean) Asian male… which makes the college admission MOST difficult.

@busdriver11
No, I’m not getting annoyed. I said I would do it so I’m doing it. I have been in the same position as everyone here, where all I needed was to hear from other people how likely I was to be accepted. So I’m trying to do the same for everyone here.

@jokeane
SAT and GPA are great. I’m not seeing any IB scores here though. Have you taken any? Work harder on your essays. You still have a few days. if your college counselor suggested something to you about them, follow her suggestions. She knows more about this than you do, so take her advice. The fact that you’re an international student isn’t a weakness. Admission is difficult for everyone. The fact that you’re not from the states does nothing to hurt you. However, if you haven’t taken any IB exams, that could potentially really hurt.

Hi Jen, I was accepted to Stern ED1 class of 2016. (yipee~~) but from an insider perspective, how would you say the job prospects are for us 2016’s? I know it kinda seems shallow… I really do like the school! It’s just that my parents are iffy about paying the tuition if they aren’t sure I have a decent shot at a good paying job. Some thoughts?

Hey Jen,

Why’d you only apply to NYU? Why not other uni’s in the NY area (Columbia, Fordham, Cornell)? How do you like NYU so far?

Do you ever travel around the city for a class or do you stay in one area?

Got a pretty good idea of my chances from this thread (thanks!) so now I’m just wondering how you find NYU.

Banterings - not to intrude on jen’s thread, but I had just talked about this with my parents and some older Stern students, and graduating in 2015/2016 is a fortunate thing; the economy is expected to be much stronger then.

Even if the economy is strong, you can’t rely on the school name for a job - you have to work hard, get the GPA/work experience/connections if you really want one of the more ‘prestiguous’ jobs.

Jen, I forgot to tell you about my class rigor.
I also copy&pasted my older post.

I took 3 APs (US History, Chemistry, Calculus BC) in my junior year,
and had 95, 100, 102 in them, respectively. Also did fine on the AP exams.
and I am currently taking 3 APs (Statistics, Human Geography, Physics) as a senior.
and have mid-A, low-A, and over 100, respectively.
I’m #1 in my physics class and I got one of my recommendations from my physics teacher.
This schedule is usually taken by top 3%~10% kids in my grade.

Other than the APs, I just took regular and honors required courses (English, elective, etc.)

and I am 100% sure that the fact that I’m South Korean significantly lowers my chance. Colleges, especially great ones like Stern, receive a huge number of great South Koreans every year and try to limit the number, so the bar always goes up significantly.

Congratulations! I’m sure you’ll love it here :slight_smile: Yep parents are all about that kind of thing haha. Honestly, I have no idea unfortunately. The economy’s rough right now, so idk what the class of 2012 and 2013 is going to do. But I’m hoping that’ll all turn around by the time my year applies for jobs. So I hope it’ll work out for all of us.

@katamariforever
I didn’t apply to any of those schools because, after much research, Stern was the only school I really saw myself attending. They have great classes, good job prospects, and unparalleled travel abroad opportunities. I like it at Stern so far. The classes are interesting and the professors are great. I’m very much looking forward to next semester, when all my classes will be Stern classes :slight_smile: Right now, all my classes are within a five minute radius of each other. I assume that will change at some point later on, but right now I’m pretty much at one place. Good luck!

@jokeane
Great stats :slight_smile: I think you have a pretty good chance at admission. Best of luck!

@hhh890
I can’t help you with this, I’m sorry. I never went to the june orientation because I had a final exam scheduled for that day. So I don’t know if they are the same thing. I would suggest attending both if you can though. It can’t hurt.

@quarterer
Good stats, good shot at admission. Good luck.

@randy1234
I’m a little worried about your SAT score, it’s on the lower side of what Stern averages. Just to be safe, I would apply to CAS econ, and then later transfer to Stern if you choose to do so. Good luck!

@Lamestream
I don’t do Tisch chances, I’m sorry. I don’t know anything about Tisch. I don’t know how much emphasis they place on your scores vs. your portfolio. You’d be better off reposting this on a Tisch thread. Best of luck!

@jen72197 Thanks, Will do! Do you mind chancing me for Steinhardt? Thans :]

Wow Jen really good job with this whole thread. I’m in shock! You answered all my questions before I even asked them. Your responses pretty much echo what I’ve heard about Stern when I visited; the school is not for everyone and it’s dependent on you rather than others to find what you want.
Your insightful answers have really covered a good breadth of topics. If I have any additional questions I’ll be sure to check by with you.

Jen or anyone else-
What are the higher starting salaries for nyu like? Cuz I know that according to bloomberg the avg is only like 60k.

Thanks

Sent from my SPH-D600 using CC App

@Lamestream
Again, I really can’t help you with anything besides Stern. I simply don’t know enough about the other schools to give you an accurate reading on your chances. Look for other threads, I’m sure they’re circulating around. Best of luck!

@thecollege1
you’re very welcome :)

@cneogy
I’ve heard figures like 80k, but I’m not sure if that’s the highest.

Hey Jen do you know anything about the maximum number of stern courses a CAS student can take. I read 12 is the max number of units, but can someone take more than the 12 and have it not count towards graduation requirements or something?

@cneogy: The higher paid Stern grads are probably in i-banking, which has around a 65k base, but once you add in bonuses (signing + performance), total compensation can be around 130k.

@jen.

Thanks for your reply. Stern is a reach for me, but CAS seems like slight reach/match. Should I apply Stern ED, checking the box saying that if I’m not accepted to Stern, please see if another college is appropriate for me OR apply CAS RD?

Hey jenn!
I was just wondering if you had any advise for the supplement portion for nyu’s application. I’m just finalizing the last details, but I feel I should add something. What direction did you take on the short answer questions and the overall essay?
