I AM: Indonesian, studying in Singapore; Full IB Student; Grade 9-10 in Jakarta; Grade 11-12 in Singapore; Planning on applying Early Decision II

My first choice is actually Acting - Performing Arts in Tisch, but another half of me want to go for the business program in Stern. I REALLY need tips and advices whether I should go to Tisch or Stern. I'm actually really looking forward for applying to Tisch, but then again... Stern is kinda there. Stern has such a good business program, especially the International Business which I'd love to be a part of. Tisch, on the other hand, is just amazing in the performing arts and I've been acting since I was 10.

I've just emailed NYU recently and since I'm an IB student, they want me to just give in all my predicted scores instead of just 3 HLs.

Predicted IB Grades:
7 Business and Management HL
6 English A1 HL
4 Chemistry HL
7 Biology SL
6 Spanish ab initio SL
7 Mathematics SL

If TOK/EE/CAS is included it would be +3.
Total = 40/45

Oh and for Tisch, yes I know what to do for auditions. Thankss so muchh!

Hi, I do not have a good sense of your background or experiences in business. While I am not definite that you have to have a whole lot of business related activities right out of HS, some related business activities are likely a positive for application to Stern. I do see that you have high grades in math, business and management. These strong grades are good, as Stern admission appears to be more driven by grades and test results than the other schools at NYU. So, your standardized test scores like the SATs will be very important for consideration to get into Stern.

My general impression in looking at your ECs is that your passion and investment of time,
Skill building appears to be in drama and the arts/ music. Ultimately, this may make you a stronger candidate for Tisch than for Stern. Sorry, I do not see anything really special or unique for an application
to Stern based on the info you posted.

On the other hand, you really seem to have a competitive background
of activities and experiences in the arts, which would point in the direction of a good match with Tisch.
It also will depend on your audition or art portfolio for Tisch program considerations. AND, of course, keep in mind that Tisch is likely to be
the most competitive school to apply to (even ahead of Stern) because of the small number of very qualified students who are accepted into
the various Tisch programs.

I hope you can use this feedback to assist you with your decision and
maybe someone from Tisch or a Tisch parent can be helpful. Actually, if writestuff does not mind, maybe she can respond since her daughter is a top student at Tisch (drama). And hellodocks, our active Stern
sophomore here on this forum, may be able to respond to your inquiries. You might try pm’ing them and hopefully, they can respond. I know both people are very busy.

GL. Your background sounds intriguing to me ( the arts part, in particular).

Hey thanks so much for the feedback
I agree, that my passion for business is definitely, not as much as what I have on performing arts and acting. The reason why I chose business too is cause of my parents who prefers me to go into the business stream. They are not an arts person and they have this (annoying) strong belief that people who go into an arts stream may have a low percentage of being successful compared to those in their business majors.

Tisch, no doubt, was my top choice. I was all ready to video my audition. Planning my butt off for my awesome ECs in the arts and acting and music. The downside was the lack of support my parents have for me to choose this Acting major. I am upset that I can’t choose what I actually have the passion for.

But, if I don’t have any choices left, and is forced to apply Stern anyways, do you have any recommendations for me to strengthen my ECs? I’m applying to ED II, and I heard ED II isn’t applicable for Tisch anyways. Still confused in either Tisch or Stern.

I believe that I’m probably going to end up applying to Stern though… :(

I am a parent of a student in tisch drama, and I encourage you to go with your own personal interests and passions. The skills you learn as an actor, particularly at tisch which explores the arts from many angles – not just technique – will equip you well for whatever paths your career might follow. I put paths in plural because your life may take you in many directions you might never have envisioned. Good luck.

Thank you for the luck. My ECs definitely show how I truly love Tisch. Any suggestions on how to talk about a passion that they want to do in the future to the parents? They still currently want me to take business then the drama.

I wish I could offer you advice on how to speak to your parents. I am just so firmly of the belief that children need to determine their own path in life and I recognize that no matter what a student majors in, there are still any number of directions one can go post-grad with a career. Perhaps you can do more research on the opportunities at Tisch for internships, classes in arts management, business, etc. and develop a list of the careers that Tisch grads have gone on to. (there probably is something like this on the website).

I would also post this question on the parents forum. I think you’ll get a wider range of input and advice there. Put the subject as relating to the broader issue of getting parents to back your interest, rather than just NYU in the heading and you’ll get more people chiming in.

The other thing about NYU – no matter the school – is that once you’re in the city, you will be exposed to so many different opportunities to combine your artistic passions with directions other than / in addition to acting. Going for the Drama program doesn’t have to mean that you will be consigned to a lifetime of waiting on tables. :-)

I would also suggest you post this on the Drama Major forum. You might get some good advice from those parents as to the reasons they support their kids in this endeavor!

I am heading to Tisch, and applying there. I will take a minor in the Business of Entertainment, Media, and Theatre in Stern. Amen that everything will go well. I am upset that I can’t fulfill my parents’ dreams. But I also am not in the wrong. It is my university path way, and I will be 18 next year, meaning I’m an adult who is needed to be responsible for the future ahead of me.
